Fomitopsis pinicola
Hungry tendrils
tap the heart
making fallen trunks
into brittle twigs
as stronger brothers
look on
towering above
to provide shelter
for all that
now call
their fallen bretheren
home

Gideon’s Challenge
The Sunbathers
Delicate petals
ruffle in the breeze
as sunny faces
tilt up
towards the sky
So sweet
and delicate
they seem to be
and yet they
bask
happily
in the savage heat
and water
is all they need

Gideon’s Challenge
The Heat Dome
Temperatures rise
then rise some more
and records break
then crumble
while sun sears
everything in sight
and heatwaves rise
to blur the world
while people
wilt in the shade
make room
I want to dive in

Gideon’s Challenge
Taking Time
Knees land
on a bed
of pine needles
as body bows
to rest forehead
upon the cushion
of soft moss
Breathe in
Breathe out
While fronds
of sword fern
tickle flesh
and the quiet
sinks in

Summer Laze
Tiny little eyes
seeking sunlight’s
kiss
as they bob
in the breeze
and tempt
the bees
and I could sit
for hours
and watch
petals flutter
and let the hours
flow by
with iced tea
and you

Gideon’s Challenge
Tangled Limbs
Shadows scattered
over skin
dance in a
merry breeze
as falling needles
land and tickle
to decorate
and tease
come lie with me
beneath blue skies
and the stretch
of evergreen
who will shelter us
as we lie
in a tangle of
languid ease
