Riding the Shifting Currents

Today’s meditation was a ten minute #DailyCalm session from the @Calm app.

•    •    •    ◈    •    🌻    •    ◈    •    •    •

Daily Mental Health Prompt: Seek a positive message to carry with you throughout the day and offer perspective.

Holly Black's Faerie Tarot - Eight of Moths, Eight of Wands

Today’s draw is the Eight of Wands, which is traditionally a representation of action, speed, alacrity, fast paced events or change, or having a target goal in your sights that you are charging towards.

The card has then been combined with a Breathing Techniques card from the Rethink 120 Learning Cards For Mindful Daily Life deck, which says, “Hold a feather close to your nose. Inhale slowly and deeply, trying to keep the feather floating in the air with your breath.”

Sometimes when changes are thrust upon us we can take them in stride. Sometimes, we lose our footing and need time to adjust. Other times we are able to spread our wings, catch the air currents, and keep up with cheerful alacrity.

There is no set and steadfast response, though. We all go through times when we’re prepared, and times when we’re so taken by surprise that we’re knocked on our ass. The key is to focus on adapting to what’s going on around you. This adaptation and flexibility will allow you to often dodge the painful parts of the process, and move with the flow instead of getting stuck in fighting against it.

The message in today’s Eight of Moths and Feather Breathing card is a reminder that adaptation is the key to riding out change with grace, no matter if that change is sudden, fast paced, a surprise, or tortuously slow.

@thewitchstherapist Understanding My Parts Spread

Oracle Reading with L'Oracle de l'Essence Sacrée

Card to represent a part of me to explore.

Le Choix de Perception

This card speaks of my negative inner narratives and the efforts I put towards balancing them out with a more positive outlook.

I was trained to see the negative. It was something ingrained into me from my earliest memories, and probably before them as well. The theory being that when you stay pessimistic you are not taken by surprise when things go awry, and when you are negative in your perceptions you see flaws more quickly and thus can fix them before anyone else notices.

This makes pessimistic thinking and negative perspectives a valuable tool, but when we prioritize these qualities, it’s also harmful to ourselves and our well-being. Thus the need for a counterbalance such as tools that help foster positivity, optimism, and hope to keep the negative from taking over and permeating everything.

What does this part struggle with the most?

L’étreinte de la Nuit

Authenticity. The you beneath all the damage and training.

It is hard to separate yourself from the demands and influences of the past and freely embrace the self beneath them you’ve been unable, thus far, to become acquainted with.

Stillness and silence occasionally give you peeks at the person that lies hidden behind the veil of influences from your past, but these glimpses are fleeting.

How does this part express its needs?

La Voix Unique

This part of yourself asks you to not focus so much on harmonizing with others, but instead pursue those things that are interesting to you.

Each person is unique. Each voice is unique. It’s in our diversity that we create the beauty of the world around us and how things come together to “just work” instead of being forced.

This authentic part of yourself seeks to communicate through these unique interests that spark your curiosity and enthusiasm. It’s when you march to the best of your own drummer that you most closely get in touch with that authentic part of yourself and hear them most clearly.

What does this part need from me?

La Forêt de Rêves

Let go of the demands and expectations of the past, and listen more closely for those moments of genuine interest and curiosity that whisper within you.

Your past and its training, thoughts, opinions, and expectations are loud. They shout, roar, and bluster. That inner place of authenticity that your past has not broken or buried is quiet, but still there. It needs you to be quiet as well, so that you can listen more closely.

Card to represent something this part needs to hear.

La Beauté de l’Ombre

“I hear you. I understand you. I support you.

You are not lost, and the abuses of the past are just that, in the past. Although the echoes still have a voice, each and every day I seek to bolster your voice as well, to lift you up and give you priority over that which is dead and gone.”

Tarot Reading with Holly Black's Faerie Tarot and The Familiar Magic Pocket Oracle

A way I want to move my body that feels enjoyable

Four of Toadstools; Mouse and Oats

It is in the stillness and grounding of nature where you will find what you need. Sometimes it’s not about pushing harder, but instead in connecting deeper.

Spend some time among the trees and moss connecting with the roots beneath the earth. In doing so you will be stronger, steadier, and more grounded than ignoring your needs for more “productively active” pursuits.

Something my body has been needing more of lately

The Star; Rabbit and Dandelions

Stop avoiding the “work” involved and dive in to explore and create. Look at this time of productivity as an adventure instead of a chore. Seek ways to turn your sense of duty and responsibility into positivity, play, and eager anticipation.

Connecting With and Savoring Life

Today’s meditation was a ten minute #DailyCalm session from the @Calm app.

Daily Mental Health Prompt: Seek a positive message to carry with you throughout the day and offer perspective.

Tarocchini Mitelli - Fortune card

Today’s draw is the Wheel of Fortune card, which is traditionally a representation of luck (both good and bad), changing circumstances, the ups and downs of life, and the cyclical nature of life and the world.

In the Tarocchino Mitelli deck, this is called the Fortune card, and is one of two cards in the deck that represent human destiny, the other being Death.

The Fortune card has then been combined with a card from the Art From the Heart Affirmation Cards, which says, “I trust my inner voice and intuition. Slow down, quiet your mind, and go within. Only in the stillness of your beam can you recognize the soft ripples from your wisdom.”

My meditation today was also about stillness, and how in touching upon stillness we find moments of centering within ourselves and a resulting moment of peace. The session guided the listener in taking a a beat to savor moments of stillness and silence prior to disrupting those moments with music or other distractions.

In these cards, I see a reminder that life is about what we do with our moments. Whether good luck or bad, our gift is in life itself. It is in the situations and experiences that we go through, and that we get the most out of the life we are given.

The message in today’s Fortune card and affirmation encourages us to savor that life. Not just the good moments, but also the bad. To find the boon, to enjoy what we can, and to be mindful that someday it’s all going to be over. Thus why it’s even more important to find and enjoy whatever good we can while we can.

Tarot Reading with the Slow Holler Tarot and The Lantern Oracle

A dream or wish I still carry with me

Six of Vessels and Donuts

The tea house. Ever since I was very little, I have always dreamed of owning and running an apothecary and teahouse. One business split in half but connected. An apothecary on one side where natural remedies are dispensed to those who need them, and a teahouse on the other that sells house blend tea and a selection of delicacies to sit and enjoy with your cup.

I’ve even played this out in writing role-play at one point, although I never actually let anybody know that it was my dream business that I was playing at at the time.

I don’t think that at this point this is a dream that I will ever be fulfilled, and that’s okay! It’s still one that I daydream about quite often, though, and sometimes visualize in my meditation practice.

Something I want to learn or explore more deeply

Traveler of Branches and Graveyard

I would like to delve deeper into my mediumship work. Like most things that I’m curious about and enthusiastic about, it’s difficult for me to go slow in this area no matter how much I feel like it’s important that I do so.

I am delving deeper into this area a little at a time, though. It just somehow always feels like I could be doing so much more. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that I’m holding myself back on purpose, and at those times I end up feeling restless.

I think the slow speed is important, for it will keep me from trampling over things that I don’t yet understand, or charging past things that are important to the learning process.

Tarot Reading with the Tarocchini Mitelli

Clarity – How can I allow myself to pause and gain more clarity?

King of Cups and Six of Swords

Stop trying so hard to protect yourself from your emotions or to control them. Emotions work differently than thoughts, and you won’t be able to deal with them in the same manner or treat them in the same way as you do your thoughts and inner narratives.

In order to gain more clarity, you have to allow your emotions to have the space to express themselves openly and clearly, consulting with those that know better than you in this area when you are able to. Running away just makes things all the more clouded and confused.

Mercury conjunct Jupiter – Where am I ready to start thinking bigger?

Ace of Cups atop Ace of Coins

Retail therapy is not working out for you of late, and you are looking for new and different ways in which to get that taste of dopamine without spending the coin needed to do so through the retail therapy route.

Some people eat their emotions, other people spend them or spoil them. There’s all different sorts of ways in which people seek out a “self-medicating” path where their emotions are concerned. You are looking for one better suited to your current situation than what you’ve previously been using.

Jamie Sawyer's Tarot 33.6 Red Pencil Sketches - The Sun

Today’s draw is The Sun card, which is traditionally a representation of success, optimism, positivity, fun and frivolity. In my practice, the Sun is also a symbol of masculine vitality, virility, and warmth.

The Sun card has then been combined with the Creating Cooperation card from The Healing Mantra Deck, which says, “More gets accomplished when everyone has a role to play.”

I’m not gonna say that you can’t have success by doing it all on your own, for that isn’t true. But, what I see these cards saying today is that success is more pleasurable and satisfying, greater and more enjoyable, when it is shared with others.

By delegating the workload, not only do you get to take pleasure and satisfaction from the success of your endeavor, but you get more enjoyment along the way throughout the process because you have more freedom and space to savor the journey.

The message in today’s Sun card and affirmation is that in most of the goals that you choose to pursue on your own, consider how inviting others to join in and help out might improve the experience. Not just the end result, but the experience in getting there as well. In most cases, you will find that by including others in your endeavors, those endeavors become more enjoyable as a whole.

How can I better connect with my inner adolescent?

Seven of Swords; Tension and Hunger

Acknowledge the trials you went through, and the fucked up things that you did back then to survive. These things stole away your innocence, but we’re a necessary part of survival at that time. It’s time to stop judging yourself so harshly for them.

How does my inner adolescent feel right now?

Knight of Pentacles; Omen, Lantern, Map

Hyper-vigilant. These experiences in your adolescence are how you developed the “Mr Fix It” tendencies you carry to this day.

Your inner adolescent started out as a child and developed into a problem solver out of necessity. They are still stuck in this hyper-vigilant problem solver mindset all these years later after you have already become an adult, always on alert for the next problem to arise so they can head it off at the pass.

The Magician Rx – Powerlessness is not your strong suit, nor is expressing yourself and how you feel when you are stuck within a cycle that includes your hands being tied.

The Devil atop Nine of Pentacles – At these times, instead of giving into the temptation of sitting back on your laurels and appreciating what you have while you wait for things to pass, step forward and communicate with those around you. Share with them how you are feeling and what you are experiencing. Be kind to yourself in this communication.

Ten of Pentacles – In doing so you don’t just invite others in to support you when you need a little bolstering, but also to be there when things smooth out and help you put things to right in your life once again.

Take Away: When you are struggling, approach family and friends with how you are feeling. Not with accusations and demands, but with an open dialogue that is kind and forgiving to both yourself and others. Confiding in them and enlisting their support helps everything return to a more stable status quo far easier than it otherwise would.

Chromatika Tarot - Seven of Pentacles and the In This Moment Affirmation Cards

Today’s draw is the Seven of Pentacles, which is traditionally a representation of slow growth, sustainability, domestic harmony, hard work, and practicing patience while the fruits of your labors develop and take form.

The Seven of Pentacles has then been combined with a card from the In This Moment Mindful Affirmation Cards, which says, “In this moment, I am in charge of how I feel, and I choose happiness.”

Developing a healthy and happy mindset takes time. For someone like me, whose natural tendency is to lean towards pessimistic thinking and negative inner narratives, it can take a lot of time… and a lot of effort too.

That is, after all, what this daily practice with the cards is all about. It’s about finding nuggets of positivity to help balance out all the negative crap going on in my brain. And, it’s okay that it takes as much time as it takes, because this activity is not a cure, but rather something to be sustained for a happier and healthier life.

The message in today’s Seven of Pentacles and affirmation card is a moment of re-orientation. Sometimes the negative self talk in my head tries to tell me that this activity is just a waste of time and energy. These cards are a reminder of why I do this practice every day, and provide a moment of reflection to reconnect with the purpose of this activity.

Oracle Reading with the Food Tarot

Something I would love to try if I had more time

Chili Pepper and Banana

Strength training. There was a time when I went to the gym regularly for strength training. This, along with regular yoga and pilates, allowed me to have a great deal more strength and flexibility, and thus more mobility than I have these days.

These activities have been traded in for other responsibilities, for there is only so many hours in a day and energy available to me. If I had more time for these activities, I would love to get back into it on a regular basis.

Something I would do if money was not a limitation

Chickpea and Blueberry

I would like to allow myself more time and space to be vulnerable. A large part of each and everyone of my days is eaten up by the activities required to pull in the money I need for simple day-to-day survival and comfort. This means I need to have my “shields up” a great deal more often than would be necessary if money were not a motivating factor in my life.

: How can I courageously embrace change?

Tarot Reading with the Chromatika Tarot - The World card, The Hermit card, Two of Wands

Two of Wands – Make a plan. Even if the plan doesn’t work or goes awry at some point, having a plan in place helps you feel more confident in dealing with change. You can always adapt to that plan later on, or toss it out the window and make a new one if needed. It’s not about setting that plan in stone, but rather the confidence it inspires within you.

The Hermit Rx – Remember that you’re not alone. Change can be very challenging, and it’s easy to get lost in the uncertainty. Reach out to others to help support you during these times instead of trying to take it all on your own shoulders and not bother anybody else. Those that would help you in these situations are the same people that it’s okay to see you when your vulnerable.

The World – Don’t lose track of the fact that the changes you’re riding out it will eventually come to an end. Everything is temporary, including change. Sooner or later there will be a lull where things will settle down again, if only for a little while before the next change comes calling.

Lost Code of Tarot - Four of Coins

Today’s draw is the Four of Pentacles, which is traditionally about stability and gratitude (sometimes to excess, which can turn miserly) for what you have. This is a stagnant sort of appreciation that speaks of not reaching for more, but instead being focused on what you have in the now.

The Four of Pentacles has then been combined with a card from the Messages From the Universe Oracle, which says, “It’s never too late to start over. You have to trust in the magic of new beginnings. They are waiting for you. Notice them, seize them, and appreciate all that you have. Just relax and trust.”

I have mentioned before that I have a tendency to mistake stagnancy and stillness for stability and security. It even shows in my speech. I say things like “brace for impact” or use the word foundation in the context of a “stable” and stationary base.

This is a perspective that I just recently realized is inaccurate, for it turns out true security and stability is created not through stillness and stagnancy, but through awareness and adaptation.

The message in today’s Four of Pentacles and affirmation card is a reminder that freezing in place or bracing for impact doesn’t create stability… it just makes you an easy target. Lean into awareness, observation, and adaptation instead, and you will find stability is more about “developing your sea legs” than it is about refusing to sail in the storm.

What do I need to focus on for self-care for this month’s new moon?

Nine of Pentacles and Peppermint

Allow your past successes and accomplishments to inspire and motivate you.

You have built a life for yourself, and a business all your own that has thrived for over a decade before the hiccups of this past year. Don’t let current obstacles convince you that you can’t do anything you set that formidable determination of yours to do. Bolster your flagging confidence with your past successes, and allow them to spark your motivation.

Philosophical Question: Which is more real, mind or matter?

Seven of Pentacles atop Eight of Cups; Mint

Matter is more real. Each person’s thoughts, like their emotions, are malleable and can be influenced. That means our perceptions and perspectives are flexible (and personal) and with this, so too is our perception of reality.

Matter, by contrast, is solid. A rock is a rock is a rock. It’s the same rock (and the same hardness) no matter who bangs their head against it. Thus, this is why matter becomes the anchors of reality.

Tarot Reading with the Lost Code of Tarot

Reading Summary: Why are you consistently choosing (Seven of Cups) to prioritize other’s expectations above your own (Seven of Wands)?

Just because you are pandering to them won’t create stability (Four of Pentacles); you can only do that by making choices that better align with the goals you want to accomplish (Ten of Pentacles).

Take Away: The dissatisfaction you feel in your relationships with others, and stability you seek in that area, can’t be created by pandering to their wants, needs, and expectations. It can only be accomplished by prioritizing yourself and your goals, choosing to put these things first above the expectations of others.

In doing this, you create a space of authenticity where your own values and aspirations have room to grow instead of being smothered by the demands of others.

Egyptian Tarot - King of Swords

Today’s draw is the King of Swords, which is traditionally a representation of a projective “alpha” energy, personality, or person in the area of one’s thoughts, intellect, education, ambitions, and communication. This often translates into themes that have to do with someone that has a way with words and is able to use those skills to lead others to their way of thinking, as well as those that are in authority on intellectual topics such as professors, doctors, etc.

The King of Swords has then been combined with the Vision card from The Oracle of the Soul Healing Messenger Cards, which says, “Break free from traditional thinking and embrace, open-mindedness and inclusivity. Explore different angles, gain deeper insights, and understand complex issues comprehensively.”

Yesterday we had a (brief) visitor to the Tarotholics server on Discord that had me thinking about the closed-mindedness of hatred. This person’s particular hatred was Christianity, and to be even more specific… Christians.

Now to be clear, I am not a Christian. I have never been a Christian, and I have very minimal experience and exposure to that religion compared to most of the North American population. Regardless of this fact, I know that there are good Christians out there, just as I know that there are bad ones. I know that not all Christians believe homosexuality is wrong, or that being trans is wrong, or are hypocrites about right and wrong in general.

This person did not know this apparently, or had closed themselves off from listening to and understanding these things. They were rude and abusive to Christians in the same way that bad actors in Christianity are to Pagans and individuals of other ideologies.

How is this okay? In my opinion? It isn’t, of course. They were removed from the server for their abusive rhetoric. But, it got me to thinking about hate, and how hate closes us off.

The message in today’s King of Swords and affirmation card is a reminder that hatred makes people look stupid and closed minded. It makes people unable to see beyond the narrow scope of their own perspective. Hatred isn’t progress, it isn’t strength, it doesn’t heal, and it isn’t cool looking or tough looking. It’s ugly and isolating, and diminishes one’s potential and power. It’s self abuse even as it fosters the potential for also doling out abuse on others. These cards remind us to look at any hate we harbor closely and seek out understanding instead of closing oneself of. Don’t generalize… dig deeper instead.

Eight of Wands Rx atop The Star; Freeze Up Moon

When I am forced to go slow and bide my time, I worry I will lose the opportunity to grow things in the direction I want them to go. Hope does not feel like enough to sustain me during these moments.

A large part of the reason I tend to feel the urge to move quickly and decisively on those things and opportunities that matter to me is the fear that if I don’t, they will be taken away from me.

I’m not sure I’ve passionately expressed this truth, but it’s open and honest, and clearly needed to be out in the open.
