#TwentyOneTarotQuestions Non-VR to Lisa Papez

So recently (as in sometime in the past two weeks?) Lisa Papez on YouTube did a hashtag challenge and I really enjoyed it. I haven’t done one of these “non-VRs” in quite a while and I thought this would be a fun one to jump in on.

Tarot of the Hidden Realm

Brian Froud's Faeries Oracle1: What is the deck they’ll have to pry out of your cold dead hands?

Tarot of the Hidden Realm and Brian Froud’s Faeries’ Oracle.  I have back ups of both (and multiple back ups of the latter due to experiences with past mishaps).  I use these two decks more than any other decks in my very extensive collection, both individually and together.

2: What’s your guilty pleasure deck?

All of them?  What is a “guilty pleasure deck”?

After some digging, I like Marlene Theresa’s definition of a “guilty pleasure deck”. (I watched a number of different replies to this question to figure out what this term means and I like her take best). She called a guilty pleasure deck as a deck that “you enjoy, but that is not necessarily highly regarded or people might tease you because you enjoy it”.

Hilda TarotOkay, so… I made myself a Hilda Tarot deck (and printed off a copy for my partner as well). At the time, there was a “Hilda Tarot” out there that was selling by someone on Instagram, but I really didn’t like some of the art choices, and I felt it was a bit plain. I wanted it to feel like spring and summer and celebration, and so I made one for myself that embodied that theme.

I can’t tell you how many people have given me strange looks and questions about it, considering it’s a deck filled with a lovely plush red-haired woman primarily dressed in bikinis throughout the cards. And yet? It’s one of my absolutely favorite summer decks.

3: What’s the deck you wish existed?

I want a tarot deck based on tea.  Majors being tools for tea like the cup, pot, strainer, etc.  Each minor suit a different type of tea such as herbal, black, etc… with each card in those suits a different flavor of tea within those types.  Done in watercolor artwork ala Siolo Thompson’s style, with botanical illustrations mixed into the artwork.   Not something just slapped together but done with meaning and intention, with a guidebook that goes into why each was chosen for the card it represents.

4: What deck would you give to a new reader?

The Rider Waite Smith TarotI very much feel that the Rider Waite Smith is the -best- deck to learn from. It’s what all the literature out there is based off of, and holds a great deal of symbolism that many clones lack.  I know, though, that a lot of beginners are turned off by the artwork and color scheme.

For those people… the This Might Hurt Tarot is very accessible and is becoming more and more easy for people to get their hands on. It’s very relatable to modern perspectives as well. I have a whole list of tarot decks I might recommend to a beginner, but that one is one that has been climbing to the top of the list steadily since it was first created.

5: What deck do you want to get along with but it just never clicked?

Tarot of the Sidhe - Pan, The DevilThis would be the Tarot of the Sidhe. There’s just something about it that makes it a deck I struggle to read with. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I’ve tried modifying the deck to find the “sweet spot” for reading it, and yet? It’s still one that, the mass majority of the time, I’ll avoid reaching for if there are pretty much -any- others available.

It has something to do with the artwork, clearly, but I’m not sure exactly what it is. Something about the harshness or color use or… I’m just really not that sure but there’s just -something- in there that throws me off every single time.

That doesn’t mean I can’t read with it, but it’s just not one of those that I immediately reach for.

6: What deck do you only keep for the art?

animaantiqua

My collection of Anima Antiqua decks by Lo Scarabeo.  I don’t really read with them all that much.  I just very much enjoy the historical context and artwork, and exploring how things developed over time in the area of tarot as a whole.

7: What deck did you buy because everyone else did?

The Alleyman Tarot.  I can’t say I’m overly impressed with it, and honestly? A lot of the art choices just completely turn me off.  It also bugs me how many of certain cards their are (such as the Death card), and yet only one of others that could really have used an alternate (such as the Chariot card). It could have been… better in so many ways, and I just feel like I fell for the hype and ended up let down in the end.

Spirit Keepers Tarot Revelation Edition8: What deck is over your head or just baffles you?

Benebell Wen’s Spirit Keeper’s Tarot. I’ve read her books and I’ve studied the deck, but I think it’s just… too cerebral for me.

The thing is, I read cards first and foremost by intuitive hits off imagery, and in this deck that is muffled by the massive amounts of symbolism and imagery that is triggered not by intuition but by knowledge and study, logic and academia.

This heaviness in intellectual symbolism seems to create a sort of tug of war during my reading the cards that I find difficult to get past.

Tarot of the Animal Lords9: What deck surprised you?

Tarot of the Animal Lords was really surprising for me. It was one of my very first animal decks, and I didn’t expect it to be so easy for me to read.

At the time, I knew that I really leaned into decks that featured plants and plant symbolism, but I wasn’t sure how I would feel about an animal deck. It clicked right away, though, and it was through this deck I found one of my favorite tarot niches.

It was also one of the first decks that taught me that I was far better as a reader when pulling messages through my intuitive hits off imagery and my intuition, rather than just the “intellectual” memorization of traditional meanings.

10: What deck doesn’t really work for you but you keep it because it’s a collectible?

The Anima Antiqua Wiener Secession Tarot.  It does not speak to me at all and doesn’t really fit in my collection either, but it is a part of the Anima Antiqua series, and I have all the others so I had to add this one to have the complete set.

Botanica Tarot11: What deck is your favorite gilded deck?

Okay so this is a weird answer, I know.   But… the Bontanica Tarot.

Specifically?  This is because when I shuffle it in the sunlight, it’s like it is farting fairy dust, and for some reason I find that ultra fine tuft of gold dust to be extremely amusing.

At first? I was a bit irritated by it. But over time it’s grown on me and I really find it fun now instead of irksome.

ASL Tarot12: Which deck do you love – but hate the card stock?

The ASL Tarot fits this particular descriptor. The colors combined with its illustration style really speak to me, which is a bit surprising since the colors are a bit garish… but, they do.

The thing is though, the cardstock is atrocious and makes the deck extremely difficult to work with. It’s the thickest cardstock I’ve ever worked with, and has absolutely no bend to it at all.

Let us not also forget to mention the fact that because of cardstock choices made by the creator, the deck doesn’t fit in the box. In fact, it doesn’t even come -close- to fitting in the box.

13: What deck gives you the willies?

The original Thoth deck with Lady Freda Harris’ illustrations. The artwork makes my stomach churn and creates the uncomfortable feeling of being in the room with an abuser (raised hairs on my arms, clench in the solar plexus, burn in the breast bone area).   I keep it around for research and study purposes, but I don’t use it outside of those reasons.

Ritual Abuse Tarot14: What’s your favorite deck for shadow work?

It’s a tie between the Ritual Abuse Tarot and the Tarocchi di Connessione.  A lot of people like lighter and brighter decks for their shadow work, but I find that I require something that gives a bit of a punch and can wring out my insides. Both of these decks have that in common.

Tarocchi di ConnessioneOne of them has a very “screaming in the dark” feel to it that speaks to my frustrations and angsts (Ritual Abuse Tarot).  The other has this sort of gothic lost in the dark feeling of danger and unrest that I sometimes need to address when I’m dealing with inner child work (Tarocchi di Connessione).

15: What deck do you love in theory but not in practice?

The Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot. I really liked this deck when I received it and love the artwork, but that quickly shifted and I ended up so damned pissed off at this deck when I tried to use. So much so that it went immediately into the “leaving” pile, and I had it listed and then sold within a day. You can read all about my irritation and complaints with this deck in one of my previous blog posts.

16: What deck would you never use to read for someone else?

I can’t think of any decks that I won’t use for someone else, although I have a handful of very adult themed ones that I won’t read for someone else without making sure they know what they’re getting in for with the imagery first.

RWS Tarot

I take that back.  I have a deck handed down to me from a dear friend that used to be her grandmother’s. It’s just a regular RWS deck, but I feel it would disrespect the energy that lingers in the deck to use it to read for anyone other than this friend’s family and that’s what it’s reserved for. I have plenty of other RWS decks I can read for others with if need be.

Egyptian Tarot

17: What deck would you never use for yourself?

I have a handful of Egyptian themed decks that I’ve added to my collection specifically at client request. I’ve actually tried using them to read for myself, but they don’t click for me in that context. They seem to read fine, though, when using them to read for others.

Slow Holler Tarot18: What deck could you NOT bring yourself to buy?

I’m going to say the Slow Holler Tarot here (it’s mentioned below in #21 as well) primarily because of the price.  It’s not that I don’t want this deck. I’ve wanted it for a very long time, and missed my opportunity to purchase it when it was first printed. It’s that I cannot bring myself to pay the prices being -asked- for the deck since it’s gone out of print.

Tarot de Marseille par Pole Ka

19: What’s your favorite pip deck?

Oh, that’s easy. The Tarot de Marseille par Pole Ka. It’s creepy and cute and entirely pip because… well, it’s a Marseilles deck. I love it. I really enjoy the bit of macabre with the cranky faces and dose of cuteness.

Wonderland Tarot in a Tin20: What deck slaps you with the truth?

The Wonderland Tarot in a Tin is definitely the deck that slaps me with the truth, and anyone I read for using it as well. It’s very sharp toned in its messages and it doesn’t pull punches. It’s one of those decks that’s excellent for when you need to hear the truth but think you probably won’t -listen- even if you hear it, as it cuts through all that bullshit.

21: What’s the deck that got away?

The Slow Holler Tarot (as mentioned above in #18).  I have been kicking myself for years about this deck.  Back when it was being sold by the creators on their website, I decided to pick it up. But, because I didn’t want to shuffle money around between bank accounts, I decided to wait for pay day to purchase it.

And… on payday it was sold out, and was never restocked. Ever.

The price immediately skyrocketed beyond my reach, and I’ve never managed to get my hands on a copy as a result. Considering what it goes for these days when someone wants to part with a copy? I’m sort of doubting I ever will.

Finding Balance in Stillness

Today’s meditation was skipped.

Ritual Abuse TarotToday’s draw is the Justice card, which is traditionally a representation of cause and effect, repercussions and consequences, fairness, truth, balance. and often the law and legal matters.

What comes around goes around. When I see the image on this card, that’s the phrase that comes to mind. It’s like the figure is leaning in to aggression. The head decapitated in the background, and blood still dropping from the sword.

The thing is? Scales can’t balance in chaos. Scales can’t balance with movement and aggression in the mix.

The message in today’s card is about how we find our balance in life, and how we find our footing on our life’s path.  It’s not through chaos and aggression.  It’s through taking a pause that you can allow for balance as the scales ease their sway.  In the quiet they can slow and still.  The more you fight and lean into the chaos, the more the scales will tip and sway.

: Poltergeist – What needs to be banished from your life?

To The End Love OracleReading Summary: You need to look at where in your life, either due to loving you (Love) or out of a sense of respect (Honor), your loved ones are enabling you in unhealthy ways (Temptation).

Take Away: It isn’t the love or respect that needs banishing, but rather what they are doing with it that is the problem. This boils down to a form of dishonesty, for they are withholding their true thoughts and feelings “out of respect” for your own choices, not fully realizing that your decision-maker can and is compromised at times by temptation, addictive tendencies, and self destructive urges.

Questions for October 14th thru 17th – The Ritual

Ritual Abuse TarotThe blade it cuts what’s rooted deep, what am I to rod of, what am I to keep?

Seven of Swords – Any thoughts of escaping what is to come need be let go of now. You are too close to the holiday rush for escapism fantasies, and need to instead pivot and fight.

Four of Swords – Make sure you are getting enough rest. You are no longer “of an age” where you have the boundless energy of your youth, and you need to make sure you are refilling your tank in order to make it through the weeks ahead without crashing.

The wand it swings, it works for me, how can I conjure what I may need?

King of Wands – Own your passion and drive, and control it with a tight fist. Delegate and direct so that you are not doing everything yourself.

I let the chalice guide my heart, I drink from it, I embrace this part:

Two of Cups – Those who love you are there to help. Don’t forsake their help and exclude them due to pride or a desire to not burden them. Instead, let them add their strength to yours.

From south, to north, from east to west, what am I to plant or to manifest?

King of Pentacles – Authority and stability need to be your main focus this season. Not independence.

Daily Self Kindness

I rested a lot today.  Lots of sleep and elevated leg time.

Don’t Be Discouraged

Today’s meditation was just over twelve minutes long, and was the sixth installment of the Foundations III series on the Balance app. This meditation dealt with the labeling of thoughts and sensations, and introduced special awareness through sound and (towards the end) sight.

Pazzol Tarot and Thera-Pets Emotional Support Animal CardsToday’s draw is the Knight of Pentacles, which is traditionally a representation of  an active beta energy, personality, or person in the area of one’s finances, resources, manifestations, home, health, and the physical world.  This often translates into an active pursuit of these particular themes, alibi… usually a slow moving pursuit, as the Pentacles suit as a whole has a tendency to take its time.

Today is an orders day, and I am…. so not interested.  I say that a lot recently, don’t I?  But it’s true.  I’m not experiencing the joy I once did in my work and that in turn means that I’m not getting the same amount of enthusiasm.   I keep trying to get back in touch with that enthusiasm, but… It’s not happening.  At least not quickly.

These cards are a reminder to keep trying. Keep going.  Things might be going slow and they may not feel like they’re moving fast enough, but they -are- moving.  Just keep going… it’ll be fine.   This message is about keeping the faith, and keeping your eye on the prize, no matter how discouraged you might feel in the moment.

Seasons of the Witch Samhain Oracle and Ritual Abuse TarotFor each full cycle, each moon to come, what am I to conjure before the end of ’21?
Transformation and Page of Swords

Focus on improving your communication with those around you.  It’s not always easy to get yourself across the way you want.  Remember this struggle is something we all deal with, and you can foster better communication by making sure that you are being open about your struggles instead of trying to pretend you’re not struggling and everything’s fine… which comes off a bit heartless when you are fumbling the message.

Your Current PathThe Crematorium and Five of Cups – Nothing is going to be good enough this holiday season, and you are going to be burning the candle at both ends. This is not unusual for the six weeks or so of the holiday rush, and is a path you have tread upon again and again.

Potential OutcomeThe Madwoman and The Lovers – The outcome of this path is a time of forced recuperation as your body and mind revolt from the abuse, and it begins to feel like the world is falling apart around you when really it is you falling apart. As you arrive at the end of the holiday rush, you are at the end of your rope and exhausted, struggling with sleep deprivation, and in need of some healthy choices to help bring yourself onto a track of recovery.

I’m playing catch up on posts at the moment and I have no idea what self kindnesses I might have done on this day. I know that I had my smoothie, though, and that I added a large pinch of spring mix added in.

We Are Not Born Wise

Today’s meditation was done twice.  I did my morning meditation of ten minutes with interval timer for my piriformis stretching.  I then did a second meditation later in the day just before our Samhaim ritual started, in order to help ground and center myself for the ritual to come.  Both were needed and seemed to help a bit not just with grounding but with the low grade anxiety that’s been playing havoc with me for the past few days.

Madam Lydia Wilhelmina's Tarot - The HierophantToday’s draw is the Hierophant, which is traditionally interpreted as a religious or spiritual leader and/or institution with spiritual wisdom and the authority to lead others along traditional spiritual paths using their wisdom and experience. Conformity to traditions is a strong component as well in the traditional meaning of this card.

I connect very strongly with this card on many levels, although… conformity is not one of them.   I do not see conformity here in this card, which means it is one that connects for me even stronger than most.   What this card represents to me is guidance and wisdom.  It’s about teaching others to find their path… and about learning from others in ways that enhances your own path.   A teacher is no teacher at all if they are no longer open to learning as well, and in this imagery you see that he does not just hold a book of Jupiter.  Now whether this book is about the Roman god Jupiter, or the planet Jupiter is really irrelevant as it speaks to me of the fact that he is seeking knowledge.  You do not become knowledgeable and wise by sticking your head in the sand.

The message in this card’s appearance today is a reminder that exploration is a good thing. Never be afraid of failure, for even failures teach you something you didn’t know before, and all knowledge becomes valuable eventually… whether in sharing it with others, in expanding your wisdom, or both.

: Now is the time {card 1}, this is the hour {card 2}, this is the magick {card 3}, this is the power {card 4}.

Dead Waite Tarot

Now is the time {Judgement} to reign in your judgements and make sure that you are being kind to yourself and others. You do not need to be harsh or cruel to yourself to get where you want to go.

This is the hour {Knight of Swords} to charge after your ambitions. Pick up that sword and focus on your target.  Stop being distracted by trivial shit that doesn’t matter and worries about things that have no foundation.

This is the magick {The Devil} that will get you not just the things that you need… but the things that you want as well.  Just like you can’t put food in your belly without success, neither can you can you feed your addictions without the success of your business.

This is the power {Two of Cups} that will get you through. It’s not about sharing the work, but about coming together and supporting each other.  Yes, sharing the work is a part of that, but that’s not the part that needs to be stressed or focused on.  Focus on how they make you feel supported, and how you are after the same things.

Question
: What is the “Trick” I should be wary of for the next year?  What is the “Treat” that is coming to me this year?

Terrestrial TarotWhat is the “Trick” I should be wary of for the coming year?

Queen of Coins – Make sure that you are not allowing people to lean too heavily upon you or depend too much upon what you can provide for them on a material level.  Being supportive is one thing, but you aren’t a single parent raising children, so don’t put yourself in a position where you feel the onus of everything rests upon your shoulders alone.

What is the “Treat” that is coming to me in the coming year?

The Sun – There is a double meaning in the appearance of The Sun card here in this spread.   First is the traditional meaning of positivity, success, and fun.  After the holiday rush, I will be able to lean into learning how to embrace these things once more on a fully conscious level.

The second meaning in The Sun’s appearance echoes back to a reading I did on October 3rd, in which The Sun card (this specific sun card in this specific deck) came up as a representation of one of my spirit guides.  spiritual guide relationship that was indicated in a reading at the beginning of the month. Appearing again now, it is an indication that I will find myself developing a stronger relationship with this guide in the future.

Enjoying the Journey

Today’s meditation was skipped this morning because the girls would just not leave me the fuck alone.  Between that and the running of the vacuum, I just couldn’t make it happen.  I will be doing it before bed, though.  Absolutely.   I won’t skip it entirely.

Tarot of Haunted House - King of PentaclesToday’s draw is the King of Pentacles, which is traditionally a representation of a projective alpha energy, personality, or person in the area of one’s finances, resources, home and hearth, health, and manifestations. This often translates into themes that have to do with business acumen, a strong sense of responsibility, and financial growth and stability.

What stands out to me the strongest in the imagery of this card is that the king is surrounded in all of this wealth, but his sword is down and he looks bored as hell.

We all have goals to aim for, dreams to reach for.  We all have those things that we strive for in our day to day lives.  The thing is?  We spend all of this time striving… and then once we get there?  We’re bored.

The message in today’s card is about enjoying the journey.  It’s not about the end zone.  It’s about the game.  It’s about each step you take along the way and living in the moment instead of being so focused on the future that you miss all the good stuff in the now.

Letting Go of Apathy

Today’s meditation was…. yes, yes.  It was skipped again. I’m playing catch up from taking a few days off and… well, it’s an excuse to be honest.  I just didn’t do it.   Tonight perhaps, or tomorrow is a new day.  But I didn’t fit it into my morning.

Madam Lydia Wilhelmina's Tarot - Five of CoinsToday’s draw is the Five of Coins, which is traditionally a representation of tests, trials, struggles, and hardships in the area of one’s finances, resources, health, home, or manifestations.

I definitely see the struggle and hardship in this card.  What I do not see that is often present in the standard Five of Coins (RWS, of course) is the representation of salvation… of help that is either being missed or ignored.  There are just children in tattered clothes and no shoes, clearly needy and alone.

The message here is about paying attention. If these children were adults on today’s city streets?  We wouldn’t even see them.  Hell, most probably wouldn’t even see them if they were children.  We’ve become so jaded and, in some cases, frustrated by the trials and tribulations of others that so many these days don’t even -see-  the poor and the homeless, the distressed or those in need.  They just aren’t there… even when they are standing right in front of you begging for their lives.

The message here is about paying attention, and making sure that your eyes and heart are open.  You can’t save the world, but sometimes even just a smile or a dime is enough to make someone’s life worth living another day.  Apathy kills the heart, let your heart breathe and grow by kicking apathy to the curb.

Question
: Write something free form inspired by the cards.

Ritual Abuse TarotNine of Pentacles – There was once a rich old man who lived in a house all alone. He was very rich, and very lonely. Each day he sat on his balcony at the end of another long day and watched the sun set.

One day, a bird landed on the railing of his balcony. He watched the bird, and the bird appeared to watch him.  They sat in silence together and watched the sun set that evening, and then the bird came back again the next day, and the next after that.

Over time, he began starting up a conversation with the bird.  He would tell the bird about his loneliness and discontent, and the bird would sit silently and listen.  They would then watch the sunset before the rustle of feathers would indicate the departure of the bird into the night.

One day, the bird came, but was acting strangely.  The bird would not settle and seemed to be having trouble with its balance.  The old man got up from his balcony chair to take a closer look, and discovered that the bird had somehow lost its eyes.  Where once there had been deep brown, watchful eyes, now there was nothing but empty sockets.

Seven of Cups – The man felt bad for the bird, and thought perhaps it would be best to put the bird out of its misery.  He carefully picked the bird up and brought it inside, intent on snapping its neck and burying it in the garden.   But, throughout the night, he found that he couldn’t do it.  He thought about keeping it as a pet, but this also felt wrong as the bird had always been wild.

Finally he was so mixed up in the choices before him that he couldn’t decide what to do.  In his distress, he asked the bird “What should I do??” and surprisingly, the bird answered him.

The bird told him that it wanted to make a trade.  That if the old man was wiling to give the bird one of his own eyes, then the bird would be able to see again and would be greatly rewarded for his sacrifice.  But, without eyes, the bird told him, that it would surely die either by flying into a tree or being prey to other forest creatures.

The man thought on this long and hard, considering what the bird had said, as well as what a good friend the bird had been to him for so long, coming each day to see the sunset.  If he gave up one of his eyes, he could still enjoy the sunset, and the bird would be able to as well.   It was a great sacrifice, but he didn’t want to go back to being so utterly alone.

In the end, he chose to sacrifice his eye to give the bird back its sight.  He remained still and silent as he allowed the bird to pluck out his eye and swallow it down.  His howls of pain were great, but when he settled and was able to take a breath once more, he opened his one good eye to find a beautiful woman before him. She had only one eye.. an eye the exact same shade as his own, and her smile was radiant.  Her raven like hair was beautiful,  like the wings of the bird that had been by his side each evening for so long, and  her touch as she tended to him gentle.

Nine of Cups – The beautiful woman patched him up and then helped to guide him out to the balcony once more, and together they sat to watch the sunset, the man’s heart finally at peace with his life and the company he keeps.

Question
: How should I embrace my missed message?

Nicoletta Ciccoli Tarot

Reading Summary: Don’t close your eyes (Far Left Card) and ignore what’s happening (Center Left Card)… Keep your eyes open and aware (Center Right Card). It might be a little scary sometimes, but you need to be aware of what’s going on (Far Right Card).

Take Away:  This is about embracing messages from my spirit guides and acknowledging where they’re coming from… not specifically about the missed message from the other day.  It’s funny, because just before I pulled these cards I was thinking that we were beating that poor missed message to death, and then what comes up is not about that missed message at all but about paying attention.

And it’s true.  Some of the whole spirit guides stuff is a bit scary sometimes. But as the cards say, that doesn’t mean close my eyes and pretend it’s not happening.  It’s time to be open and aware instead of playing pretend that they’re not there, as I have in the past.

Question: What do I need when I meditate?

Ghosts & Spirits Tarot

Reading Summary: A quiet place (Imagery in the Ten of Pentacles), with my intuition and inner knowledge (The High Priestess). And for everybody to just take a hike (Imagery in the Three of Wands Rx ) leave me alone for a bit (Imagery in the The Chariot).

This reading leaned deeply into the imagery of the cards and had very little to do with the actual card names.  I didn’t even realize the card names (or that they might fit the reading) until after I’d already taken down my summary notes.

Take Away:  Essentially, I need to be left alone so that I can meditate in peace, and to combine that peace and quiet that that time alone provides me with getting in touch with my deeper self and subconscious.  If I can’t sink into that deeper self, I can’t meditate because every little single noise or sensation will distract me again and again.
