Ostara 2022 – Spring Equinox

Tomorrow is the Spring Equinox, which is considered by many to be the first day of Spring, and is one of only two moments in the year when the sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length. After this day, the brightness of daylight begins to overtake the dark hours in the sky as the days continue to longer and longer, and the nights shorter and shorter.  This transition is the basis within the celebration of the holiday itself, as we celebrate the warming and awakening of the earth as she prepares to share her abundance and generosity with us all.

In my path, the Spring Equinox is also known as Ostara.  Although this holiday is celebrated (as Easter around) the world by those that embrace many traditions that originated in Paganism, most don’t realize the full and rich history that this holiday holds.

Like with new moons and full moons, I usually do a spread to check in with myself and give myself some direction for the next couple of months for each solstice, equinox, and other Sabbats. This spread is an adaptation of my Self Care Saturday spread, so there are sure to be  some similarities in how it is read. The focus of this spread, though, is not about Self Care, but rather about progress and my path. The time period is also longer, reaching through the next handful of weeks until the celebration of the upcoming Beltane at the beginning of May.

Theme of the SeasonOstara, Waning Gibbous Moon, Betula alba (Silver Birch)

Ostara, as mentioned above, is a celebration of nature’s awakening after the long winter’s sleep.  It’s about the eager energy of spring finally beginning to show itself to us in visible ways, and the uplifting hope that comes with this renewal of energies in the world around us.

In farming, the Waning Gibbous Moon is a time of planting (with the exception of annuals) and transplanting, as it’s believed that absorption of nutrients from the soil occurs the most during the waning phase of the moon, and this sets up bulbs, tubers, and young plants with the energy and food needed to burst into growth for the approaching new moon to come.

Metaphysically, it is a time of release, in which we focus on ridding ourselves of bad habits, negative thinking, and other barriers that hold you back from growth, creating room for more positive energy to flow in as the new moon approaches.

Silver Birch (Betula alba) symbolizes new beginnings, renewal, purification, and protection. This tree holds lessons for us in how hardy even the most fragile of us can be, and in lessons to do with potential and growth. Its oils, extracted from the bark, can be used as an insect repellent as well as to treat certain skin conditions, while an infusion from its leaves is both a diuretic and antiseptic. It’s sap also has healing properties that are useful in treating urinary tract infections.

When looking at these three cards together, the theme that I see here is as the Ostara card says… “The land shall sign with the promise of Spring”.  Yes, the equinox is here and yes, spring has begun, but it is the promise spring brings that we see in these cards.  A promise that in the days and weeks to come we will find energies renewed, and life once more ready to emerge and grow strong.  The abundance is not quite here, but it’s coming. The promise has been made… and it’s coming.

EarthFive of Cups – Dissatisfied and pessimistic. This is something you’ve been battling a lot over the past month or so and you’re finally at a place where you are aware of what is going on and that it’s not just a fog but a depression. This awareness has the potential to allow you to see your moments of dissatisfaction with your current progress towards manifesting what you want as a side effect of that depression.  An illusion instead of reality.

AirKnight of Cups atop The World – Stuck in the moment and not focusing ahead on where you’re going but instead on old ideals. The Knight faces toward the past and toward the world of potential that the past holds.  Turn around and look forward towards the future, instead of staying stuck focusing on past ideals.

WaterThree of Wands – You’re getting there. The depression screws with your emotions, but you’re on your way to clearer skies. It may not always feel like it, but keep moving forward and don’t look back (an echo from the Air section of this reading).

FireSeven of Swords – You need to let go of what is too heavy to carry. Moving forward is easier without all that weight. Ease up on the expectations you put on yourself and let go of the responsibilities that don’t matter right now. You can pick stuff up later on after you’re feeling better if it’s still important at that time.  Right now, it’s just too heavy and is weighing you down. Take only what you can carry and leave the rest.

WaningThe Mystic and Staff – Wandering into the woods with no direction and allowing yourself to meander is not going to serve you well right now.  You need direction, purpose, and focus at the moment to assist you on your travels both spiritually and in life.

WaxingThe Reconciler and Moon – Accept what cannot be changed and focus on what you can alter through reasonably chosen achievable steps. Don’t allow your imagination and what is illusory to stand in your way, but instead use determination to seek clarity, purpose, and direction.

Take Away – Everything here is about opening up to potential. There is a great deal of opportunity upon the road ahead, but in order to see that opportunity clearly and take advantage of the healing it has to offer, it’s going to be necessary to confront inner demons and let go of the negative bad habits that are tying your hands and holding you down.

Don’t Waste Your Time

#DailyCalm with the Calm appToday’s meditation was just over ten minutes long, and was another of the guided #dailycalm meditations from the Calm app. The meditation was a full body yoga nidra, which moved through the entire body from head to foot, before expanding out to encompass the entire body.

As the quote from today’s meditation (to the right) indicates, this type of meditation makes it easy to let go of one’s thoughts and drift in a place of sensation.  It’s one of my favorite types of guided meditation.

Soul Cards TarotToday’s draw is the Five of Swords, which is traditionally a representation of tests, trials, conflict, and the harbinger of energy stirring to life after the rest and recuperation found in the Four of Swords.

You’ve got this. Slay it, baby.

The tug of war between the birds and the cat is strewn with blades of conflict.  Neither is winning… but neither is either of them loosing.

The message here is a reminder that sometimes conflict isn’t the best option.  Being contrary can waste a lot of time if you let it.  Look at where you are feeling contrary… and consider how much time you’re wasting trying to play tug of war with things and people that don’t really matter.

Question for March 19th: How can I better manage my inner critic?

Animal Totems and the I-ChingReading Summary: Accept that it’s a part of you (Alligator) and work at shifting your inner critic’s narrative (Snake) to something not so aggressive (Slug).

Take Away: My inner critic is very aggressive.  Excessively so, and I know this.  It’s not just about what could be done differently, but an abusive dialogue used to beat down my spirit and bleed my soul.

It’s a form of self destruction that can often be insidious, and other times blatant and violent.  The advice here is that It’s important to focus on shifting that tendency to a softer, less aggressive messaging.  Just don’t take it, but accept instead that it’s a part of you that you can work on and adapt, alter and improve upon.

Questions from March 17th and 18th

Soul Cards TarotWhat do I need to focus on for self-care for this full moon?

Page of Wands, The Wheel atop Six of Swords – Don’t worry so much about the ups and downs, just act to make things better. Letting the fickle moods of fate hold you back from improving your life is a bad idea, and can lead to many things you want (or need) to get done being abandoned instead of accomplished.

What are my strengths when dealing with others?

Four of Cups and Temperance – You come off as chill, easy-going, and temperate in mood and behavior. Not a lot of extremes going on, but neither are you particularly boring. You appear to know where your bread is buttered and enjoy those things to their fullest, even while displaying those places where you struggle with moderation for all to see.

I took a nap at the gas station because I wasn’t sure I could make it home safely without one.  So, instead of pushing myself, I pulled a blanket out of the back and took a quick nap.

Presence & Persistence Tarot Reading

Presence & Persistence Tarot Reading with the Faunabelle Tarot

PRESENCE: What do I most need to be present with right now?

The Sun – Focus on the positive and push optimism right now. It’s time to start the climb out of your depression’s pit, and leaning into positivity can help you in scaling those walls. Lean into these themes and stay focused on where you want to go as the light begins to grow brighter and brighter above.

EASE: What do I need to ease off on?

Seven of Cups – Stop worrying so much about all of the different crap you need to do.  You’re unnecessarily overwhelming yourself.  Consider just doing one small thing a day.  Even just a tiny little thing is more than nothing and will keep you from getting stalled out with the overwhelming amount of options on what to do that are out there.  It’s about doing one small thing a day right now, not “what can we get done”.

PERSIST: What do I need to persist with, even if it’s challenging?

Five of Wands – Hold onto your moral compass and your values.  Push back is natural now and then, but don’t give up.  Instead, look at shifting your trajectory and those of others so you can unite your passions to a purpose instead of butting heads.

GIFT: What am I learning through all this?

Ace of Cups – You’re still at the beginning of your emotional learning journey.  You need to focus on enjoying the journey more instead of where you’re going or what you need to get done.

Repetitive Adjustments

#DailyCalm with the Calm appToday’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was another of the guided #dailycalm meditations from the Calm app. It spoke of how sacred it is to give yourself time and space to just breathe. To take time to pay attention to where you are in the moment of your meditation.

How the air tastes and smells and feels on your skin, what sounds are present to touch upon the senses, etc. These are fleeting experiences that we are given the gift of a moment in time to notice, cherish, and enjoy while realizing that they are temporary and should be treasured.

Refine & Play TarotToday’s draw is the Ace of Swords, which is traditionally a representation of the seed of beginnings in the area of one’s intellect, education, ambitions, communication, and education.

There’s a need for new ideas today, and that has definitely panned out as the truth. People often associate the Ace of Spades with death, and that -also- is fitting for today.

There were a number of differences in the paperwork that I had to fill out today. The system is getting an overhaul this year, and every time I log on it seems that things have changed and a learning of something new needs done in order to get my paperwork done to go up north. Today is no different, and today’s card is a reminder that all of these new experiences and learning of new methods is helping me in adapting to the new system that they plan to have up and functional by sometime in November.

Philosophical Question for March 16th
: Is patience an inherent virtue, or is it learned behavior?

Pear Tree Court OracleReading Summary: In life, we learn and adapt out behaviors in order to get what we want (Fluidity). Patience is most often learned through others either through experiences (Partnership), or through learning from others mistakes and experiences (Gossip).

Take Away: These cards indicate that patience is a goal oriented endeavor that one learns through others, or through our own experiences that teach us that if we are patient we will reap the rewards that we seek.

On a side note, although I agree with this, I would say that some are more inclined to patience than others. This is where one’s nature comes in to the equation.

Questions for March 16th and 17th

Refine & Play TarotAsk the high priestess card “How can I better listen to my intuition?”

Strength and Justice – The more you tap in to what lies within you, the more you’ll get out of it. Alternately, should you neglect this part of yourself, it will wither. So in order to better listen to your intuition, you need to work with it more. For the more that you work with it, the louder its voice will become.

If I listen to my intuition more, what could I change?

The Devil and Three of Pentacles – You would be able to be more open to others that are willing to help you with your struggles with your addictive personality, instead of feeling like you have to do it all on your own.

🌕 Full Moon in Virgo – March 2022

Tonight is the full moon, and like all new moons and full moons, I did a spread aligned to the moon’s current themes as a part of my recognition of the moon’s cycle and influences upon us. Today’s spread is about the medicine within, and brought to you by Ethony‘s Tarot by the Moon series.

Full Moon in Virgo Tarot Reading with the Moonchild Tarot

How can I more deeply embrace my sensual side?

Eight of Cups – Why are you wasting your time on what brings you no pleasure? Let go of what isn’t working for you. Turn down the noise, turn off the machines, step out into the fresh air and silence of the forest more often.  Allow yourself to savor and even wallow in those things you enjoy, and reject those things that stand in your way of that enjoyment.

How can I be less critical this full moon?

Two of Swords – Open your eyes and make an effort to truly see why you’re being a dick to yourself in the first place. You will then be able to make the hard choices needed to set that behavior behind you.

What health and wellness areas need attention?

King of Wands atop Seven of Wands Rx – Be steadfast in your passions, but not aggressively so. It’s going to take a bit of time to get back up to full steam where your motivation is concerned, and that’s okay. Don’t push, just give yourself the support you need to let things grow at their own pace.

What area of my life needs reorganizing?

Page of Swords – How you talk to yourself. You need to seek out and adopt a better way. You have fallen back on old habits that involve a cruel inner narrative geared to tear you down. You are still learning how to turn this around, but you’ll need to seek out a new (and more hopeful) way of doing things.

Full Moon advice from the Minoan Goddess Amalthea.

Page of Wands – Remember that life is a learning process and an adventure. Work on looking forward with eager anticipation.

Navigating the Dark

#DailyCalm with the Calm appToday’s meditation was ten minutes long and was another of the #dailycalm activities from the Calm app.  To be entirely fair, I had a hard time focusing on the topic of today’s meditation.

I think I was just so tired that I found the voice itself far too soothing.  I didn’t fall asleep, but neither was I able to focus on the topic of the day… which was about Humility. I do very much like the Thomas Moore quote that accompanied today’s meditation, though.

Moonchild TarotToday’s draw is the Nine of Swords, which is traditionally a representation of worries, fears, anxiety, nightmares, and insomnia.

Blades hover above her, but the figure in this card has dominance over the moon and holds it within her control.

The moon, in the tarot, is about doubt, illusion, the subconscious, and a lack of confidence… indicating that although the figure is plagued by the sharp edges of those swords, they are not something she does not have a handle on, and she will take these self doubts and lack of surety in stride instead of crumbling under its weight.

You, too, have gone through the mental health struggles, anxiety, and worries before. The depression is harsh and it gives rise to these issues when it comes to visit.  Today’s card is a reminder that you know how to deal with these issues and navigate your way out of the dark, you have only to tap into that knowledge from previous experiences and use it now.

Mr Lionharts’ #TheMarchTarot Animal Guide Challenge Prompt
Questions for March 16th thru 18th

Raccoon Tarot - The MagicianMarch Animal GuideRaccoon – Teamwork and finding healthy balance between independence and community, goal-oriented, ingenuity, industriousness, cleanliness, curiosity, adaptability, and equality.

In the Raccoon Tarot (pictured to the right), the Magician embodies the spirit of the raccoon, speaking of an industrious spirit and ingenuity, as well as the intelligence to use these qualities to accomplish what one wants in life.

Moonchild TarotA desire I should feed in support of my best self?

Three of Pentacles atop Seven of Wands Rx – Allow yourself to look for peaceful solutions that connect you with others instead of trying to always “fight the good fight”.  There are ways to stay true to yourself that don’t require aggression and allow for more of a bonding relationship with those around you.

In what way could respecting my needs liberate me?

The Lovers and The Tower – Respecting my needs will allow me to find healthier and more supported transitions when things fall apart and need to be rebuilt.  There’s a great deal of rebuilding going on in your life right now on a number of different levels.  Making sure that healthy choices are being made with create a more stable foundation for that new “construction” going on in your life.

What is the first step I can take to honor my needs?

The Moon and Six of Wands – To begin to honor your needs, seek to emerge from the darkness and the fog. Right now, you need to focus on returning to the light. Let yourself be seen, and make sure that you are allowing yourself to accept praise and admiration instead of discounting it as somehow biased or otherwise inapplicable to you, your skills, or your situation.

Daily Self Kindness

I had a bout of insomnia last night and didn’t manage to get to sleep until after 9am this morning. I did a number of self kindnesses last night from staying in bed to try and sleep, to cuddling Miss Luna and watching the sunset. None of them helped me sleep, but they were all really nice all the same.
