#TwentyOneTarotQuestions Non-VR to Lisa Papez

So recently (as in sometime in the past two weeks?) Lisa Papez on YouTube did a hashtag challenge and I really enjoyed it. I haven’t done one of these “non-VRs” in quite a while and I thought this would be a fun one to jump in on.

Tarot of the Hidden Realm

Brian Froud's Faeries Oracle1: What is the deck they’ll have to pry out of your cold dead hands?

Tarot of the Hidden Realm and Brian Froud’s Faeries’ Oracle.  I have back ups of both (and multiple back ups of the latter due to experiences with past mishaps).  I use these two decks more than any other decks in my very extensive collection, both individually and together.

2: What’s your guilty pleasure deck?

All of them?  What is a “guilty pleasure deck”?

After some digging, I like Marlene Theresa’s definition of a “guilty pleasure deck”. (I watched a number of different replies to this question to figure out what this term means and I like her take best). She called a guilty pleasure deck as a deck that “you enjoy, but that is not necessarily highly regarded or people might tease you because you enjoy it”.

Hilda TarotOkay, so… I made myself a Hilda Tarot deck (and printed off a copy for my partner as well). At the time, there was a “Hilda Tarot” out there that was selling by someone on Instagram, but I really didn’t like some of the art choices, and I felt it was a bit plain. I wanted it to feel like spring and summer and celebration, and so I made one for myself that embodied that theme.

I can’t tell you how many people have given me strange looks and questions about it, considering it’s a deck filled with a lovely plush red-haired woman primarily dressed in bikinis throughout the cards. And yet? It’s one of my absolutely favorite summer decks.

3: What’s the deck you wish existed?

I want a tarot deck based on tea.  Majors being tools for tea like the cup, pot, strainer, etc.  Each minor suit a different type of tea such as herbal, black, etc… with each card in those suits a different flavor of tea within those types.  Done in watercolor artwork ala Siolo Thompson’s style, with botanical illustrations mixed into the artwork.   Not something just slapped together but done with meaning and intention, with a guidebook that goes into why each was chosen for the card it represents.

4: What deck would you give to a new reader?

The Rider Waite Smith TarotI very much feel that the Rider Waite Smith is the -best- deck to learn from. It’s what all the literature out there is based off of, and holds a great deal of symbolism that many clones lack.  I know, though, that a lot of beginners are turned off by the artwork and color scheme.

For those people… the This Might Hurt Tarot is very accessible and is becoming more and more easy for people to get their hands on. It’s very relatable to modern perspectives as well. I have a whole list of tarot decks I might recommend to a beginner, but that one is one that has been climbing to the top of the list steadily since it was first created.

5: What deck do you want to get along with but it just never clicked?

Tarot of the Sidhe - Pan, The DevilThis would be the Tarot of the Sidhe. There’s just something about it that makes it a deck I struggle to read with. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

I’ve tried modifying the deck to find the “sweet spot” for reading it, and yet? It’s still one that, the mass majority of the time, I’ll avoid reaching for if there are pretty much -any- others available.

It has something to do with the artwork, clearly, but I’m not sure exactly what it is. Something about the harshness or color use or… I’m just really not that sure but there’s just -something- in there that throws me off every single time.

That doesn’t mean I can’t read with it, but it’s just not one of those that I immediately reach for.

6: What deck do you only keep for the art?

animaantiqua

My collection of Anima Antiqua decks by Lo Scarabeo.  I don’t really read with them all that much.  I just very much enjoy the historical context and artwork, and exploring how things developed over time in the area of tarot as a whole.

7: What deck did you buy because everyone else did?

The Alleyman Tarot.  I can’t say I’m overly impressed with it, and honestly? A lot of the art choices just completely turn me off.  It also bugs me how many of certain cards their are (such as the Death card), and yet only one of others that could really have used an alternate (such as the Chariot card). It could have been… better in so many ways, and I just feel like I fell for the hype and ended up let down in the end.

Spirit Keepers Tarot Revelation Edition8: What deck is over your head or just baffles you?

Benebell Wen’s Spirit Keeper’s Tarot. I’ve read her books and I’ve studied the deck, but I think it’s just… too cerebral for me.

The thing is, I read cards first and foremost by intuitive hits off imagery, and in this deck that is muffled by the massive amounts of symbolism and imagery that is triggered not by intuition but by knowledge and study, logic and academia.

This heaviness in intellectual symbolism seems to create a sort of tug of war during my reading the cards that I find difficult to get past.

Tarot of the Animal Lords9: What deck surprised you?

Tarot of the Animal Lords was really surprising for me. It was one of my very first animal decks, and I didn’t expect it to be so easy for me to read.

At the time, I knew that I really leaned into decks that featured plants and plant symbolism, but I wasn’t sure how I would feel about an animal deck. It clicked right away, though, and it was through this deck I found one of my favorite tarot niches.

It was also one of the first decks that taught me that I was far better as a reader when pulling messages through my intuitive hits off imagery and my intuition, rather than just the “intellectual” memorization of traditional meanings.

10: What deck doesn’t really work for you but you keep it because it’s a collectible?

The Anima Antiqua Wiener Secession Tarot.  It does not speak to me at all and doesn’t really fit in my collection either, but it is a part of the Anima Antiqua series, and I have all the others so I had to add this one to have the complete set.

Botanica Tarot11: What deck is your favorite gilded deck?

Okay so this is a weird answer, I know.   But… the Bontanica Tarot.

Specifically?  This is because when I shuffle it in the sunlight, it’s like it is farting fairy dust, and for some reason I find that ultra fine tuft of gold dust to be extremely amusing.

At first? I was a bit irritated by it. But over time it’s grown on me and I really find it fun now instead of irksome.

ASL Tarot12: Which deck do you love – but hate the card stock?

The ASL Tarot fits this particular descriptor. The colors combined with its illustration style really speak to me, which is a bit surprising since the colors are a bit garish… but, they do.

The thing is though, the cardstock is atrocious and makes the deck extremely difficult to work with. It’s the thickest cardstock I’ve ever worked with, and has absolutely no bend to it at all.

Let us not also forget to mention the fact that because of cardstock choices made by the creator, the deck doesn’t fit in the box. In fact, it doesn’t even come -close- to fitting in the box.

13: What deck gives you the willies?

The original Thoth deck with Lady Freda Harris’ illustrations. The artwork makes my stomach churn and creates the uncomfortable feeling of being in the room with an abuser (raised hairs on my arms, clench in the solar plexus, burn in the breast bone area).   I keep it around for research and study purposes, but I don’t use it outside of those reasons.

Ritual Abuse Tarot14: What’s your favorite deck for shadow work?

It’s a tie between the Ritual Abuse Tarot and the Tarocchi di Connessione.  A lot of people like lighter and brighter decks for their shadow work, but I find that I require something that gives a bit of a punch and can wring out my insides. Both of these decks have that in common.

Tarocchi di ConnessioneOne of them has a very “screaming in the dark” feel to it that speaks to my frustrations and angsts (Ritual Abuse Tarot).  The other has this sort of gothic lost in the dark feeling of danger and unrest that I sometimes need to address when I’m dealing with inner child work (Tarocchi di Connessione).

15: What deck do you love in theory but not in practice?

The Fablemaker’s Animated Tarot. I really liked this deck when I received it and love the artwork, but that quickly shifted and I ended up so damned pissed off at this deck when I tried to use. So much so that it went immediately into the “leaving” pile, and I had it listed and then sold within a day. You can read all about my irritation and complaints with this deck in one of my previous blog posts.

16: What deck would you never use to read for someone else?

I can’t think of any decks that I won’t use for someone else, although I have a handful of very adult themed ones that I won’t read for someone else without making sure they know what they’re getting in for with the imagery first.

RWS Tarot

I take that back.  I have a deck handed down to me from a dear friend that used to be her grandmother’s. It’s just a regular RWS deck, but I feel it would disrespect the energy that lingers in the deck to use it to read for anyone other than this friend’s family and that’s what it’s reserved for. I have plenty of other RWS decks I can read for others with if need be.

Egyptian Tarot

17: What deck would you never use for yourself?

I have a handful of Egyptian themed decks that I’ve added to my collection specifically at client request. I’ve actually tried using them to read for myself, but they don’t click for me in that context. They seem to read fine, though, when using them to read for others.

Slow Holler Tarot18: What deck could you NOT bring yourself to buy?

I’m going to say the Slow Holler Tarot here (it’s mentioned below in #21 as well) primarily because of the price.  It’s not that I don’t want this deck. I’ve wanted it for a very long time, and missed my opportunity to purchase it when it was first printed. It’s that I cannot bring myself to pay the prices being -asked- for the deck since it’s gone out of print.

Tarot de Marseille par Pole Ka

19: What’s your favorite pip deck?

Oh, that’s easy. The Tarot de Marseille par Pole Ka. It’s creepy and cute and entirely pip because… well, it’s a Marseilles deck. I love it. I really enjoy the bit of macabre with the cranky faces and dose of cuteness.

Wonderland Tarot in a Tin20: What deck slaps you with the truth?

The Wonderland Tarot in a Tin is definitely the deck that slaps me with the truth, and anyone I read for using it as well. It’s very sharp toned in its messages and it doesn’t pull punches. It’s one of those decks that’s excellent for when you need to hear the truth but think you probably won’t -listen- even if you hear it, as it cuts through all that bullshit.

21: What’s the deck that got away?

The Slow Holler Tarot (as mentioned above in #18).  I have been kicking myself for years about this deck.  Back when it was being sold by the creators on their website, I decided to pick it up. But, because I didn’t want to shuffle money around between bank accounts, I decided to wait for pay day to purchase it.

And… on payday it was sold out, and was never restocked. Ever.

The price immediately skyrocketed beyond my reach, and I’ve never managed to get my hands on a copy as a result. Considering what it goes for these days when someone wants to part with a copy? I’m sort of doubting I ever will.

Reaping and Direction

IMG_6550Today’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was a guided meditation with interval timer again.  My stretches today were a bit stiff, which I suppose shouldn’t be a surprise since I missed my medication yesterday, which means the pirifomis stretches didn’t get done.

The topic of today’s guided meditation was about how meditation does not necessarily mean sitting in complete physical stillness.  It is about being still on the inside.  It’s about finding a quiet inner peace for those ten or fifteen or thirty minutes of our meditation practice, so that when we need it elsewhere in our day we have experience with it so that we can reach inside and find it again more easily.

Botan Tarot - Nine of CoinsToday’s draw is the Nine of Coins, which is traditionally a representation of fulfillment on an independent level in the area of one’s finances, resources, home, health, and manifestations.

What really stands out to me in the imagery of today’s card are a couple of different elements.  First, the scythe and beside it? The compass that hangs there as one of the coins on the right hand side.

These elements speak to me of the reaping that is a part of how one reaches the level of satisfaction and fulfillment that this card is about, and about the security of knowing that you have a direction that you’re moving in, and that you’re comfortable with.

Both of these elements are very important (at least to me) in finding a level of true fulfillment concerning my home life, work life, and my accomplishments. The scythe represents work and is about the feeling of accomplishment that comes with a job well done.  It’s the difference between having something of value handed to you… or actually earning it with sweat and tears.   It holds so much more value in the end when you earn it.

The message in today’s cards is to take stock of those things you’ve earned, and value them as well as the direction that they have lent to your path that allows you to feel the security of solid ground under your feet with each new step you take along the way.

Question
: Where is my heart heavy?

Dragon Age Inquisition Tarot

Reading Summary: Dependable hardworking sensibilities (Queen of Coins) directed towards my new focus and goals (Ace of Staves). It’s coming up fast (The Chariot) and I have to bite the bullet and bear down on a direction (Two of Swords).

Take Away:  I don’t feel ready to set aside the growth and inner work that has been my focus so far throughout this year in order to move into the holiday preparations and holiday rush that’s coming. The thing is, though, that I have no choice in the matter if I want the holiday rush to go smoothly and turn out well.  I need to do the responsible thing and be prepared, whether I really want to change gears or not.

: Your Personal Pain / A Healing Action To Take / Possible Positive Outcome

Wiener Secession TarotYour Personal PainThe Fool and Eight/Three of Spades -Weighing responsibility over the joy of playing the fool. This was touched upon in my reading for the Zentember challenge today as well. It has to do with feeling an inner reluctance to move away from the growth and exploration I’ve been doing over the year so far, and moving into the hard and fast responsibilities involved in preparing for the holiday rush and then riding it out when it arrives. I’m trying to not allow myself to think that having been kind to myself and going easy on myself over the spring and summer hasn’t made me lazy… but honestly?  It kinda feels like it has. And those thoughts bring with it a strong sense of disappointment in myself.

A Healing Action To TakeQueen of Spades – Instead of burying these worries or hiding from them, I need to actually listen to them with understanding and offer myself solutions that can incorporate both the responsibilities of my work along with the needs of that softer inner self. At first thought, there doesn’t feel like a lot of options here, but I think that might be my pessimism rearing it’s ugly head.

Possible Positive OutcomeKing of Spades – If I can find a way to both find as well as sustain a balance between the work I need to do and giving myself that freedom I’ve become used to and now don’t want to lose, there’s a good chance I will be able to develop a stronger interconnection allowing for clearer site that is unclouded by these issues.

Take Away – I’m not seeing the whole picture and because of it I’m feeling a sense of loss that isn’t necessary. I need to find a way to take off the blindfold that is keeping me from seeing possible solutions open to me. Finding and enacting these solutions will bring a stronger foundation to both my work, my emotional growth, and my self care along with a greater clarity on how to juggle these things in a healthy and successful way.

Question
: Something that I’m stubbornly holding onto that I need to let go of?

Science Tarot

Reading Summary: Fear of the unknown (Wheel of Fortune).  Let go of that fear and see it as an adventure (Knight of Wands), and a whole new world of possibilities will open up to you (The World).

Take Away:  Meh… yeah.  I completely agree with this.  I do struggle with the unknown quite a bit. I feel so certain and strong on my spiritual path and life path, that when elements of the unknown crop up it makes me feel like there’s a big inky black sink hole in the middle of my path.

I know that seeing these moments as an adventure is a terrific way to get through this fear, and that in doing so it opens up a vast world of opportunities and possibilities… but sometimes it’s really hard to take those moments as an adventure, no matter how hard I try.

Side note:  The Schrodinger’s Cat card in this deck is one of my favorite cards in this deck.

Question: How can I love myself more?

Haindl Tarot

Reading Summary: When you actually do your work (Three of Stones) instead of fucking around, and get it done (The Chariot), you feel a sense of accomplishment (Six of Wands) and inspiration to do more (Ace of Wands).

Take Away:  Oooph.  Okay so today’s readings are all about my work, my business, and about gearing up for the holiday rush. This makes sense, but it’s definitely a noticeable thread through my personal readings today.

Okay, anyway.  The answer to one of the ways that I can love myself more is to actually do my work instead of procrastinating or putting it off.   When I actually do my work, I lay the groundwork for self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment to bolster my self image as well as my mood, which in turn lights my inner spark for new inspirations to take fire.

Enjoying Collaboration

IMG_6310Today’s meditation was just under eleven minutes long, and like yesterday’s meditation, it was a guided meditation with interval timer element added for the sake of my piriformis stretches.

The focus of the guided meditation today was about compassion, and it reminded me of someone that I watch on YouTube from time to time.  Dustin often closes  his videos with “Remember that everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.  So be kind. Always.”  It is a phrase that has really stuck with me over time, and it is a prime example of the topic of today’s guided meditation.

The guide brought up how sometimes we are impatient or frustrated with others.  Whether it’s because they’re slower than we’d like in a store or on the road, or they’re paying with pennies in the grocery store and we’re stuck behind them, etc.  And the thing is?  Sometimes?  These things that irritate us only do so because we don’t understand what’s going on  and why they’re happening.

The thing is though?  It’s none of our business.  But what is our business is treating these situations and people with patience and understanding, regardless of whether we personally are in the know as to why whatever is happening is happening.

Hush Tarot - Three of PentaclesToday’s draw is is the Three of Pentacles, which is traditionally a representation of collaboration towards a shared goal or endeavor, usually in the area s of finances, resources, or projects focused on the process of manifestation.

This card feels a lot like the Three of Cups to me.  Three birds enjoying a treat, perched around the rim of a cup together.

And yet, being the Three of Pentacles has it’s own relevance here.  It makes this card about more than successful endeavors and collaboration, but also about enjoying the process.  It’s important to enjoy the time you put towards your projects and endeavors, and when you involve others in on these projects?  Then it’s important that it’s enjoyable for them as well.

The other day a reading suggested I figure out what it is that others who help me during the holiday season enjoy, so that I can shift those jobs to them rather than waiting until I’m desperate for help and handing them whatever jobs need done at the time.   In both instances, they are helping, and getting things done that need done.  But in the former instance they get to really enjoy the process… whereas in the latter scenario they could end up stuck with jobs that suck.

Here in this card I see the results of finding out what people enjoy and giving them those tasks rather than just tossing whatever needs done their way.

Question
: Where am I emotionally?

Sasuraibito Tarot

Reading Summary: Feeling secure and grounded (Ten of Pentacles) and supportedly (new word) inspired (Queen of Wands) as at the moment I am both receiving and giving equally (Six of Pentacles).

Take Away: Emotionally I’m feeling pretty good right now. Having a sense of balance and security is really helpful in keeping me on an even keel and making life tolerable as a whole.  I also feel pretty good about my work.  Although I’ve fallen behind a bit, I’m getting help from both L and Z, which is helping a lot in keeping that “fallen behind” from becoming something that feels insurmountable.

Philosophical Question
: What is Humanity’s biggest accomplishment?

Tarot of the Secret ForestReading Summary: The ability to rise above (Hanged Man and The Sun) experiences of betrayal and deception (Seven of Swords), allowing those experiences to inspire us to be better and become more than before (King of Wands).

Take Away: This is about more than just “learning from our mistakes” but rather about taking the bad things that happen to us that aren’t our mistakes at all, and learning how to not just move past them, but turn them into a positive growth experience.

I know that not everyone has this ability, but I do agree that the ability to “rise above” really could be one of humanity’s biggest accomplishments, if not one we’ve quite managed to master yet.

Question
: How has my family or foundation positively shaped, influenced or impacted the way I move or carry myself today?

Hardy Tarot

Reading Summary: I learned to fend for myself (Page of Swords) instead of depending upon external praise (Six of Wands), and to be secure in laying claim what’s mine (Queen of Disks).

Take Away: I can’t say that my family foundation has been all that positive, but it has taught me self sufficiency.  Although I do enjoy praise and admiration, I don’t require it.  I’m more than capable of motivating myself without that carrot dangling before me.

By the same turn, it has taught me to feel a good deal of protective ownership over what belongs to me.  This goes beyond personal possessions and includes thoughts, ideas, values, and those things that I work so hard to obtain such as a home, stability, and security.

Question: How can I make life choices more consciously?

Wiener Secession Tarot

Reading Summary: I need to make it a conscious choice (Two of Spades) to worry less about my fears and anxieties (Nine of Spades) and focus instead on embodying the strength and purpose of my endeavors (King of Clubs) while practicing the moderation needed to keep things balanced (Temperance).

Take Away:  To make life’s choices more consciously (and more confidently, for that matter), the cards indicate that I need to spend less time worrying and more time finding a balance between my drive and my need for self care.  Moderation is not my strong suit, and I have a habit of dropping myself into an endeavor and allowing it to overtake every facet of my life until it is all that I eat, sleep, or breathe.  This is a tendency that I am trying to break myself free of.

The thing is, when I focus on my anxieties?  It only pushes me more towards the need to delve deep, and pulls me away from the self care I need to sustain in my life.

Slow Burn, Not a Flash Fire

Today’s meditation was ten minutes long and took place in the bath tub.  It was so… so comfortable but at least I didn’t fall asleep this time.  I very much enjoyed the relaxation in the water for once, though.   Usually I find the tub just uncomfortable enough that I can’t meditate, but today?  It was just right and super comfortable.   Interestingly?  I also find it harder to stay awake as the water gets cooler.  When it’s really warm?  I’m wide awake, but the closer it gets to lukewarm? The more dozy I become.

Botan Tarot - The ChariotToday’s draw is the Chariot card, which is traditionally a representation of controlled progress, and the willpower and determination to go in the direction you want to go in and see things through.

These cards (the Botan Tarot) are so damned beautiful and what stands out to me the strongest in this card today is the hint of wings present in the background behind the figure that is holding the reigns.

What these wings do for me is soften the card.  I often find the Chariot card quite harsh, and yet in this imagery I see willpower tempered by compassion, determination with a touch of restraint, as the wings are spread and thus they are catching air and creating drag. If this card were in motion, I would imagine those wings would not just catch the air but feel as if they billow with it as feathers flutter in the swirling eddies of air currents.

The message here is that it’s all well and good to know where you want to go and have the willpower and determination to get you there, but it’s important to remember that sometimes? Getting there takes time.  Not because you’re forced to go slow, but because you choose to slow down to savor the journey rather than focusing on the end goal alone.

Question
: What needs healing on my root chakra? (Deals with energy, stability, comfort, and safety.)

Wiener Secession TarotReading Summary:  I need to work on finding a deeper level of inner certainty (High Priestess) even in times when my life is in a state of flux (The Wheel).   The Queen of Clubs looks on at this message as if to say that by finding this inner certainty I can then flourish more fully in the endeavors that keep my spark aflame.

Take Away:  Unfortunately, outer uncertainty in my life breeds inner uncertainties about myself. That means that when things go wrong?  I don’t just start blaming myself, but also doubting myself.

That inner uncertainty about myself then creates a lack of motivation that keeps at bay the energy of the Queen’s nurturing of my inner spark. This is where a good part of my moments of “meh” come from, and when I feel those moments, I need to take time to observe where the uncertainty in my life lies in that moment, and explore how its influencing my confidence as well as my motivation.

: Create / Evoke / Balance

Cosmic Tribe TarotCreateFive of Cups – Burnt offerings in a sea of salt. Its time to make more eggshell powder.  The last batch that Id made has lasted for quite some time, but I’ve been needing to make more for a while and keep putting it off.  I should get it done before things become so busy that it has to be put off until the New Year.

EvokeTwo of Wands – I get absolutely no intuitive hit off of the imagery in this card.  So, going by the bare bones of the RWS system… it’s time to start planning for the holiday season.  I’ve been putting it off, to be honest.  Dragging my feet and trying to just… I dunno.  Deny it’s coming?  But the fact is that it is coming, and I’m going to have to get on the ball and get my direction not just meticulously planned out but set in motion.  You can’t get moving until you start get moving.

BalanceNine of Cups – You know that phrase “too much of a good thing”?  Well that goes for everything, including emotional fulfillment and happy feelings.  It’s important to make sure I’m not pushing myself to the point of insincerity.  Working to see the bright side and lean into optimism is one thing, but to the point where it’s fake and just a load of shit?  Too much.  Pay attention to my emotions and how I’m feeling, and be honest with myself about that even when it’d be easier to just put on a happy face and keep moving.

Side Note About This Deck – It’s gotta go.  I don’t get good vibes from the artwork at all.  I don’t know what I was thinking when I bought it, but it’s definitely not for me. This is my first reading with this deck, which was added to my collection very recently…. and it’ll be my last.  It just doesn’t feel right.

: A reminder of my personal wealth or personal blessing.

Tarot of the Secret Forest

Reading Summary: The ability to sit out (Eight of Cups) on the battles I need to (Strength Rx) and support others instead instead of engaging (Queen of Pentacles).

Take Away:  I have gotten the message “choose your battles wisely” more than once from the cards over the past week. And here again is that reminder, as the personal blessing that this reading speaks about is my ability to choose my battles.

A lot of times, the battles we fight are not our own, and that is true in my case as well.  There is an encouragement here that it’s okay to not get involved in other’s battles, and to support others from the sidelines instead of diving into the battle myself.

Question: How can I build my confidence?

Science Tarot

Reading Summary: Take time (Temperance) to really explore in depth (Page of Swords) the opportunities available to me (Ace of Pentacles).

Take Away:  I’m missing something.   Not in this reading.  I mean that the cards are indicating that I’m missing some key factor in the opportunities currently available to me that could ease my discomfort with uncertainty and boost my confidence.

It’s time to take stock and make some decisions on what I want to happen and where I want things to go.  I always feel better when I have a direction, but on top of that I need to also find a way to become more comfortable with uncertainty.  This was also mentioned in an earlier reading today and has carried over into this one.
