Gideon’s Challenge – Distractions

Cluster of Muscles and Mollusks

Distractions

Lets lie down
on the pier
and hang
our torsos
over the edge
to play
with the critters
that cling
to the edges
where water laps
crisp and cold
against the
mussels and
barnacles
bathing
in the sun

Gideon’s Challenge – Longing

Longing

Blue skies
are boring
but mountain peaks
basking
pristine in their
glacier’s glory
make way
for imagination
and curioisty
to flourish
all the same

Gideon’s Challenge – Rebirthing

Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) Seedling among Red-stemmed Feather-moss (Pleurozium schreberi)

Rebirthing

New life springs
from dark places
as tender roots
search for purchase
and tender bits
reach open air
and stretch
for the sun
as the moss
whispers
to each other
about a babe
in their midst

Gideon’s Challenge – Fatalistic Hope

Mossy Tree Trunk

Fatalistic Hope

some day
the entire world
will return
to being
coated
and covered
in green
and we
will all be
gone
and the earth
will thrive
in the absence
of our
meddling

Gideon’s Challenge – Distant

Wood Hyacinth (Hyacinthodes hispanica)

Distant

Some days
eye contact
is too much
and the day
is spent with
downcast eyes
and a sense
of isolation
caused by
the inability
to connect
meaningfully
or otherwise

Gideon’s Challenge – Wonder and Awe

Lychen on Concrete

Wonder and Awe

Like the face
of the moon
some places
seem to be
far too
inhospitable
for life
to flourish
and thrive
and yet
even here
we find
bits and pieces
of nature
creating a spark
of life in
desolate spaces
