Gideon’s Challenge – Cracked

The Long Road to Nowhere

Cracked

broken bits
fall from
cracked surfaces
like ice
dropped
to shatter
on hot pavement
and although
no marks
are left behind
something
is lost

Gideon’s Challenge – Crowded

Vancouver City Street - West End

Crowded

too many people
crammed together
taking up
all the air
and all the space
so that a reminder
of their presence
lives
in every nook
cranny
and moment
and the peace
of being alone
is lost
even with no one
in sight

Gideon’s Challenge – Longing

Pixie Cups Lichen and Moss

Longing

lie down with me
among blades
of grass
and soft mounds
of mossy green
with your fingers
laced in mine
and sip
from my lips
like bees
from the flowers
as we get
grass stains
on our clothes

Gideon’s Challenge – Subdrop

Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)

Subdrop

every sense
and
nerve ending
stretches
far and wide
with sharp tips
and sensitivities
set to high
as stomach coils
and I am lost
to everything
but the feel
of your gaze
upon me
as I ache
inside… and out

Gideon’s Challenge – Phenomenon

Rhododendron - Catawba Rosebay

Phenomenon

How can
something
so beautiful
look so cold
like icicles
and winter snow
crisp underfoot
at sunset
her rosy cheeks
don’t add
any warmth
to the scene
only color
and confusion

Gideon’s Challenge – Distractions

Cluster of Muscles and Mollusks

Distractions

Lets lie down
on the pier
and hang
our torsos
over the edge
to play
with the critters
that cling
to the edges
where water laps
crisp and cold
against the
mussels and
barnacles
bathing
in the sun
