Bits and pieces
of nature’s detritus
sloughs off
to fall
to the forest floor
lingers and degrades
and as decay
sets in
individuality
is lost
as all melts back
into the soil
and becomes one
once more

Slogging onward
ever chilled
as sinking sun
casts warm glow
over distant shore
and fools the senses
into a promise
of warmth
it can’t deliver
as ice cold water
chills the toes
in the embrace
or waterproof boots

The sun cuts
through the clouds
and basks upon
my face
but I cannot feel
the joy
of it’s touch
just yet
even as I strive
to reach for
joyous sensation
yet only feel
the husk
of what could be

Whispered secrets
and scented smoke
as herbs make quiet
crunching sounds
in harmony
with the scrape
of pestle
within stone bowl
while energy rises
and swirls around
gathering strength
with every sound
of chiming bell
as it grows and grows
and then is released
as intentions flow

Dry whispers
swirl in the air
as spring’s first breath
brushes over
the husks of flora
dormant
and looking dead
but just at rest
and waiting
to awaken
and be renewed
until once more
lush and green

Winter takes a heavy toll
upon nature’s green
turning so much to gray
as dried grasses
and dormant trees
await the warmth
of spring’s sweet breeze
only the evergreens
stand tall and bright
but they are also
in on the fight
with sparse branches
ready to sprout
as soon as the seasons
turn about
