August 16 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s meditation was eight minutes long, and was a series of for three stress reduction exercises from the Calm app. Five Senses. Body Scan. Watching the breath.

Today’s card is the Five of Cups combined with the affirmation “It’s good you’re in the world today. Thanks for showing up.”

It can be really hard sometimes to see the good in one’s life. When things are down or not going your way, sometimes it gets nearly impossible to count your blessings and look on the bright side.  Instead, you get sucked into the disappointments or feeling sorry for yourself.

The message in today’s cards is to remember not to let those morose moments go too deep into the dark that they drag you right into the pit of depression. Remember that even when things aren’t going your way?  There are people out there that love and cherish you, and are glad you are a part of their lives.  There are strangers who, with just a smile from you or a small kindness, go on to spread goodness to others through the lift you gave them to their day.

These cards are a reminder that you matter… even when you’re at your worst.

August 17 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s meditation was skipped.

Today’s card is the Ascension card combined with the affirmation “You are not lost, afloat. People care about you, and you have a lot of cool stuff left to do.”

Remember that there is light in the darkness, even if sometimes it’s not necessarily easy to see. The message in today’s cards is a reminder to make sure that you are moving toward the light instead of wallowing in the dark and letting it drown you.

For me in particular, this means making sure I am consciously putting effort toward positivity and optimism, instead of indulging my natural inclination towards negative self-talk and pessimistic thinking.  In making that conscious effort, I give myself a better balance, which assists me in staying out of depression’s pit a bit longer, and not falling quite as deeply into that pit when I do end up slipping over the edge.

August 18 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s card is the Knight of Pentacles (Masks) combined with the affirmation “Words matter.”

A lot of the card-of-the-day cards this week or so have been about making sure that you are acting in line with the person you want to be and become.  They focus on behavior.  About what we do and what we say, and how these things affect other people.  Today’s cards are no different.

The road to the person we want to become is a long one that starts at birth and ends at death. It can be difficult, sometimes, not to give in to sniping and gossip, negativity and hurtful comments… especially at times when we ourselves are angry, afraid, or hurting in some way.

The message in today’s cards is that on this slow road, it’s important to keep in mind the kind of person you really want to be.  Do you want to be rejected, disliked, and feared because of your sharp tongue?  Or do you want to have friends and valuable relationships because you support others and allow others to support you in turn when you need it?

These Saturday readings are (not usually) bearing in on any one thing or event in my life, as the question used is asking for a more general outlook. This is a self care exercise, and is not meant as a predictive reading… although that, too, happens on occasion.

The question is… What do I need to focus for self-care through the week ahead?

EarthFive of Swords – Are you going to be a gracious winner? Or a gloating ass? The other guy is already bleeding and his day is fucked. Do you really need to go the extra step of grinding it in and making them feel worse? Remember the person that you want to be, and resist the impulse of the moment.

AirAce of Swords – Make sure that you aren’t ignoring or discounting new ideas this week, but instead are communicating them with others or writing them down for posterity. They’re good, and worth entertaining. Who knows, one of them might even ignite a wildfire of inspiration.

WaterEight of Swords – When it comes to your emotions, just because you ignore it doesn’t mean that it’ll go away. Make sure that you are communicating and sharing your emotions rather than trying to bury them or hide them away.

FireThe Chariot – Make sure you get moving and get things done this week. What you do this week will help pave the road forward on what comes next. That future result lies in your hands right now.

WaningScythe and Key – Although being unkind to yourself can be a key to your motivation, now is not the time to utilize that particular method of getting things done.

WaxingCrossroads and Whip – as indicated in the fire position in this reading, now is the time to make a choice between one path and another. You need to look at how you want things to go and then make sure that you stay disciplined and on the correct path that will take you in the direction of your goals.

Take Away – Take care that you are being kind to others, even when you may not always feel that they deserve it.

Communicate your emotions and ideas this week, rather than keeping them to yourself.

The message in today’s cards is a reminder not to let your misguided need to be on top of everything and in control prevent you from giving yourself the kindnesses you need.

It isn’t any better of a job if there’s suffering involved than if there isn’t.  You don’t have to bleed for a project to finish well, and you don’t have to suffer for your responsibilities to be cared for.  That mentality might be what you were raised with, but neglecting yourself doesn’t pay off in the end… it just makes everything that much harder.

What can I do to help my inner adolescent feel less neglected?

The Discipulus Oracle by Dominic MurphyJustice and Sensitivity – Remember that there’s a difference between justice and fairness. Be sensitive to what you are feeling instead of shoving it aside when faced with moments where fairness needs to take the fore.  Consciously making the choice to prioritize that need for fairness can help your inner adolescent feel less neglected.

What can I do to help my inner adolescent feel more heard and understood?

Wisdom and Giving Up – Sometimes you just have to let go of logic and go with your gut instead. Like your intuition and your spirit guides, your inner adolescent tries to communicate to you through the same methods of physical sensation.  You haven’t sussed out the nuances of how to tell the difference yet, but you will if you give yourself the time to listen and freedom to hear those inner tugs instead of leaning into logic at every turn.

When life contains toxic or harmful things in it, sometimes it can cause us to feel like there’s no way out and no way to keep going.

During those times? It’s time to cut loose toxicity and get rid of those things that are harmful to you.  That is how you continue moving onward and upward.

Toxic or harmful things can often be things we don’t think we can let go of, it’s true. The fact is, though? You can. You have in the past, although it took life giving you a hell of a beating to get to the point you could let go.  This time?  Try letting go before the beating forces your hand.

Animal Apothecary OracleReading Summary: It takes much longer to appreciate the good we see (Small Steps) and requires a disciplined effort (Tame and Attain) to keep one’s head in the sand (Perception).

Take Away: Yes, it is possible to understand good without evil. It isn’t understanding good that is the issue though. Rather, it’s appreciating it’s truly appreciating good when when one has nothing to contrast with it and truly create a sense of gratitude for it.

August 11 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s card is the Seven of Cups combined with the affirmation “Actions speak louder than words.”

Make good choices. Look at that little shit in the background, standing there laughing at the girl who fell down instead of helping. Do you really want to be that jerk? Make sure that you think before you act, and make good choices.

And if you -do- want to be that jerk?  Maybe it’s time to step back and do a little self reflection instead of just going ahead with such asshat-ish behavior.  Dig deeper and figure out why you are leaning into being a dick instead of trying to make the lives of others (and as a result your own life) better. Why are you making these negative choices instead of more positive ones?

August 12 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s card is the African Daisy card combined with the affirmation “It’s truly impressive how far you’ve come.”

Confession… I have a tendency towards self-sabotage. It is a part of the whole “not good enough” mentality that I’ve been trying over the past few years to soften, but that self-sabotaging? It’s a hard habit to break, and I often don’t even realize I’m doing it until it’s too late.

That makes success that much more sweet, though, right?  When even you are against yourself, and you succeed at something anyway? It’s a double win.  The cards for today are a reminder that even in these times when self-sabotage is at it’s strongest, we have the strength and perseverance to get through and keep going.  To survive and succeed.  Sometimes we’re able to get out of our own way, and sometimes we just can’t… and that’s okay.  Just keep going anyway.

Today’s card is the Hermit card combined with the affirmation “Not every day will be this hard.”

The Hermit card is all about self-reflection and alone time.  Combined with the affirmation for today, today’s message is that to mitigate struggles and recover fully from stress, make sure that you are getting enough time to yourself.

The root of a great portion of your struggles is in-person interaction with others. That needs to be balanced out by healthy alone time. It’s only when you allow yourself to have both that you find a better life balance as a result.

EarthThe Boulder Fluffer – Taking time to be out in nature is non-optional for you. Even when it feels like work just to figure out a way to get out there and you’re really not feeling all that enthusiastic about it; you still need it. So get off your ass and do something about it.

AirCave of Ken – Trying new things can be harrowing and breed a sense of uncertainty. Remember that the more you know the less scary that new something will become. Do research before you start on your journey, and continue with that research as you move into the unknown.

WaterThe Basement – When you are feeling “small” and vulnerable, everything feels much bigger, much much darker, and much more scary. Don’t let your fears hold you back, turn on the light (via research, talking with others, etc) and make sure that you can see things clearly before moving forward with actions.

FireThe Open Door – Get moving. The door is open and the way is clear. Now is the time to move.

WaningRing and Star – Don’t allow your hopes for what might be convince you to make commitments that you’re not otherwise prepared to make.

WaxingChild and Tree – A healthy inner child means a healthy you. Make sure that you’re taking time for play and to enjoy life.

Take Away – Sometimes it can be hard to pull yourself out of a rut, and that’s what you’re in at the moment.  For a time, this was good, as it gave you time to rest and heal, but now the path is clear and the door is open to begin something new and get moving again.  Don’t allow your time of stillness drag out until it turns into stagnancy.  Start enjoying yourself.  Start looking into ideas and seeking out passionate pursuits.  And if you’re feeling a little uncertain in taking those first steps?  Do a little research to set you on your way with more confidence.

No contracts.  No agreements.  This is a carry over from last week. Now is not the time, no matter how appealing they may seem.  Don’t do it right now.  Wait a while longer.
