Gideon’s Challenge – Breakable

Tender Flowers - Indian Plum (Oemieria cerasiformis)

Breakable

Fine and delicate
like spun sugar
so thin that
even the warmth
of a single breath
could melt
the strands
or the slightest
of touches
shatter
figure and form
to leave nothing
but crystaline shards
and sticky drops
of sweet dew
on the floor

Gideon’s Challenge – Stiff

Spring Lichen

Stiff

The stretch
aches
as muscles pull
and arms raise
to reach
for the sky
like branches
but shorter
and the spine
bends
with a creak
and series of
cracks
as a new morning
dawns

Gideon’s Challenge – Happy Together

Seagulls in the Pacific Northwest

Happy Together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me, and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby, the skies’ll be blue
For all my life

Me and you, and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

Gideon’s Challenge – Bashful

Persian Cyclamen (Cyclamen periscum)

Bashful

A blush rises
as eyes
cast down
and head dips
as if to hide
from the world
behind
silken strands
that falls forward
as if to conceal
delicate skin
with a hue
of pink
that spreads
toward the ears

Gideon’s Challenge – Longing

Mountain Landscape

Longing

The heart aches
as eyes gaze
to horizons
far away
and long for
moss draped
branches
and spongy ground
covered in
pine needles
and
evergreen fronds
fragrant
in the moist air

Gideon’s Challenge – Breathless

Evergreen Landscape

Breathless

Hard rocks
scrape
beneath
boot treads
as the climb
takes us
further
from the sea
and closer
to the
peaked tips
of green giants
standing sentinal
in the sun
