Winter Solstice 2025 – Yule

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice! This holiday is (in essence) the Pagan equivalent to Christmas. Fun fact… when Christmas was placed on December 25th, the church chose that day to coincide with the pagan holiday of Yule (because as most know, Christ was actually born in the spring, not in December).

Although many of us have been feeling like we’ve been in it for months, the Winter Solstice is the “official” first day of winter, and marks  its spot on the calendar not by its date, but by being one of only two days each year where the daylight and darkness are equal.  In my path, this holiday marks a day of hope for the future, and candles are lit to celebrate the return of the sun as it begins to now become more and more prominent with each day that passes and every day becomes longer as the nights decrease.

Like with new moons and full moons, I usually do a spread to check in with myself and give myself some direction for the next couple of months for each solstice, equinox, and other Sabbats. This spread is an adaptation of my Self Care Saturday spread, so there are some similarities in how it is read. The focus of this spread, though, is not about Self Care, but rather about progress and my path. The time period is also longer, reaching through the next handful of weeks until the celebration of upcoming Imbolc at the beginning of February.

Winter Solstice Tarot Reading with the Jahreskreis Orakel Der Keltischen Feste, Pagan Underworlds Tarot, Compendium Of Witches Oracle, and the Healing Herbal Cards Vol 1-3

Theme of the SeasonYule / Licht in der Dunkelheit, New Moon, Coriander (Ceriandrum sativum)

Yule (Light in the Darkness) is a time when we celebrate that the light is to beginning to once more return to us.  From now until mid-summer, each day will be longer and each night shorter.  With the longer days and the return of the sun, the earth will begin to warm and awaken.  This returning of the light is the very first step towards warmer weather, spring, and rebirth.

This year the Winter Solstice lands on the waning end of the New Moon. The New Moon is a time of beginnings, when we take the ideas we have been fostering in the back of our mind and bring them forward to prioritize and begin to encourage to grow. Planning is the first step to acting on one’s dreams, and the new moon encourages us to plot and plan to our heart’s content concerning those things most important to us, and that we want to accomplish or achieve.

Coriander (Ceriandrum sativum) is is metaphysically used to stimulate bold energies, awaken passions, and protect through clearing away issues with jealousy, ill will, and stagnant energies. Added to this, in areas of health, coriander is a source of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. It is an antioxidant that is believed to assist in lowering blood pressure through its diuretic properties. Its essential oil also contains antibacterial properties.

When looking at these three cards together there is a pervasive message that speaks of a need to let go of those things that are “poisoning the well”  as the new beginnings that come with the Winter Solstice and New Year approach.   As the light grows, commit to allowing it to burn away the negative influences of ill will and stagnancy, so that the light can invigorate and heal.

EarthNine of Cups – Savor more. Work at living in the moment, and enjoying those moments to the best of your ability.  Seek out those things that make you happy and make the choice to enjoy them rather than brushing them aside for aspirations.  That time spent savoring creates a stability that all  your striving never can.

AirKnight of Swords Rx – Watch out for moments of impulsiveness. Take care to make sure that you’re taking a pause and actually thinking things through before you act. This especially includes before you speak, particularly if you’re jumping forward to speak out of turn.

WaterSeven of Cups – Don’t allow your emotions to get involved in making decisions, or you may find yourself stuck and unable to choose which way to go. Logic is needed, and when emotions get involved, sometimes logic becomes harder to ascertain… or harder to actually choose out right.

FireTwo of Pentacles – Lean into focusing on creating a good balance in your life between the opposing forces within you. Remember that balance is not stagnancy. It requires movement in order to be achieved and sustained.

WaningThe Dusk Child and Roots – “A balanced view relies on the acceptance of obscurity, just as a healthy tree relies on the nourishment of the black soil.” – Guidebook

It is best to linger on the surface for the time being, and allow the light to do the healing work that it needs to do for you. You’ve spent enough time in the dark, and your inner balance needs the light just as trees need sunlight.   Your roots are oversaturated.

WaxingThe Oracle and Scythe – Lean into the development of your intuitive abilities. Although logic is a solid foundation for making decisions, it shouldn’t trump the knowledge that comes from within.  Even without proof, that knowledge holds the high ground through its consistency at being right.

Take Away – Recommit yourself to the light as the warmth of the sun’s return burns through the darkness this Winter Solstice.  You need to focus more on your mindfulness, positivity, and optimism exercises to balance yourself out, and allow yourself to trust your moments of intuition without question.  Just take care not to mistake impulse for intuition. They’re not the same and the former can cause a lot of extra problems you don’t need.

🌑 New Moon in Sagittarius – December 2025

Today is the new moon, and like all new moons and full moons, I did a spread aligned to the moon’s current themes as a part of my recognition of the moon’s cycle and influences upon us. Today’s spread is courtesy of @hermitsmirror

New Moon in Sagittarius tarot reading with the X'mas Elf Tarot

CLEARING: What sensitive areas have I poked and prodded enough for now?

Three of Pentacles – You’ve done really well at including those in your life more in dealing with your responsibilities. Teamwork is going well right now and there’s no need to keep picking at it for the time being. You’ve noticed this in the delegation of housework, daily tasks, and order processing of late.

TRANSITIONAL PAUSE: How has diving deep inspired me to look far and wide for my next journey?

Queen of Wands – Even when you are unenthused, you still need to keep moving. This is something that you’ve struggled with ever since you started exploring your emotions more in depth. As a result, you are coming to an understanding that even when your emotions are low, it is no excuse for not giving yourself the support you need; and that it’s through continuing on in creative endeavors that you enjoy that you are able to pull yourself out of these slumps.

NEW SEEDS: What mind-expanding experiences are made possible by boldness?

The Hanged Man – When you allow yourself to explore different angles of perspective, it gives you a far more expensive experience and understanding then you would otherwise receive. Sometimes these moments allow you to get a peek at the truth that you were trying to deny, while other times they allow you to see the truth in others that they are trying to hide.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS: How does constantly shifting allow me to find my flow?

Five of Swords – “Flow” is all about movement. When you remain still, things become stagnant and there is no “flow”. Stagnancy is toxic and promotes decay. It takes time to climb out of and recover from it once it’s managed to set in. You’ve found that it’s better to keep moving, even if you’re moving blindly, than to stand still and let the stagnancy gather around you.

PLANETARY BOON: What good fortune awaits discovery?

Eight of Cups – By sticking things out instead of giving up and walking away, sometimes those things that have you wanting to walk away will turn around, and you’ll find that you don’t need to move on after all.  It’s all about picking and choosing which things you decide to take a chance on, and if you’re okay with it not turning out… because sometimes that can happen too.

New Moon advice from the Minoan Goddess Amalthea.

Knight of Swords – Keep going. Just because things feel uncertain now and then doesn’t mean it’s time to put down the sword and stop fighting.

Goat Figurine as Sympathetic Representation of Amalthea

🌕 Full Moon in Gemini – December 2025

Full Moon in Gemini Tarot Reading with The Myth Weaver Tarot

How am I deluding myself?

Ace of Swords Rx (Excalibur) – The “strong silent type” is a myth you need to remember not to buy into. Communication is key to healthy, strong, stable relationships with others. The adage that “sharing is caring” holds truth, and not just in sharing resources, but also in sharing your thoughts, emotions, and ideas with others.

What am I missing?

Eight of Cups Rx (Tane) – Movement. In a previous reading you did, it was made clear that movement of any kind is better than stagnancy and the creeping in of depression that stagnancy brings with it. Don’t allow yourself to sit in stagnancy right now, as you are just coming out of depressions pit, which leaves you vulnerable to falling back in again.

What perceptions need to be shifted?

Justice / The Measure (Maat) – Remember that sometimes fair does not look like fairness, and balance does not always look like balance. Sometimes there are things going on outside of your perception that make these things (fairness and balance) work even without appearing as if they should.

What requires further investigation?

Tower / The Ruin (Medusa) – You haven’t yet delved into all of the possibilities and opportunities that have been presented to you through the chaos and destruction that took place in the past few months. Don’t just write this experience off as a loss and leave it as that. Seek out the boon and those opportunities hidden among the rubble.

What possibilities are ready to show themselves?

Page / Seeker of Cups (Selkie) – You are being given the opportunity to learn to see things in a new perspective when it comes to the destruction wrought by chaos. Instead of allowing your emotions to take control and send you careening off the walls, these moments help you learn how to process those anxieties and emotions instead, so that you can shed them and keep moving.

Full Moon advice from the Minoan Goddess Amalthea.

World / The Sacred Return (Quetzalcōātl) – It’s time to focus on beginning again, carrying forward with you the lessons that you have learned thus far. Leave behind you the journey and the struggles of the past year, take with you the lessons and start anew. Look at the new year to come as a fresh start and begin the process of letting go in order to allow that to happen more smoothly.

Carved Rhyolite Leaf for Facilitating Calm Transitions

Goat Figurine as Sympathetic Representation of Amalthea

Month End Check-in Reading with the Southern Gothic Trilogy Decks

Here and Now I Exist – Who you are now, in your entirety.

The Panther – The fire within you is rising, and along with it, your strength and perseverance. You are starting to feel in control again in ways that you haven’t in quite some time; in healthy ways that help create drive and balance, instead of the unhealthy ways that create stagnancy and sickness.

The Slough – What is to be left in the past as you move forward.

Nest of Wasps – Although you usually don’t realize it in the moment, when you’re in the depression, you have a sharper tongue, and your words have a tendency to sting, even when you don’t mean them too. Now that the depression is easing off, that sharp stinger is fading as well. Taking time to be conscious of your tone when communicating with others will help you shed this sharper edge quicker.

What Lies Ahead – An ideal state or ideal self you are seeking at this time.

Uncle Monday – You want to be stronger in both your mundane abilities as well as your magical ones, and are seeking to develop better adaptation abilities than those you currently possess.

Limitations – Negative influences, opposition, or ill will.

Hazel the Mummy – The things that you hold onto too tightly will in time turn from stagnancy to decay and crumble away. Make sure that those things that you want so badly to hold onto aren’t actually holding you back from something better.

The Boon – Positive influences, higher guidance, or divine intervention.

Alligator – Take time to explore the self. Digging deep instead of just skimming the surface will help you in connecting and prioritizing those things that are most important.

The Wound – An unpleasant past experience or event that is ripe for some support and healing.

Hydrangea – It can often be difficult to be grateful for things that happen in life. Especially when they hold a negative consequence instead of an obvious boon. You’ve very recently acquired a whole new set of inner scars, and have yet to find and really appreciate the boon involved.

Nostalgia – A positive past experience or event to acknowledge, reflect upon, and enjoy.

The Dog – Take some time to reflect upon and appreciate those that you trust to be by your side, no matter what. Some love is unconditional, after all, and needs to be recognized as such and appreciated.

A Warning – Something coming that can be prevented or overcome.

Cornbread – Make sure to take some time to connect with the roots of who you are so that your ego doesn’t get in the way moving forward. Remember that being a “basic bitch” isn’t necessarily a bad thing it keeps you humble and helps you connect more strongly with others.

Empowerment – A future opportunity to work toward.

Abandoned Plantation – There’s a great deal of opportunity in the deconstruction of things. Make sure that you aren’t just letting these opportunities go to waste.

Message from the Spirit World – Self reflection may cause you to find you’re not as generous as you could be.  Harsh judgements can be destructive. Instead of indulging in those negative veins of thought, use your mindfulness and self awareness to shift toward a kinder and less harsh frame of mind.

Message from the Mind’s World – People depend upon your dependability. They follow you because yo tu provide them with a sense of stability and strength that allows them to actually enjoy the activities (even the work) that you do together.

Message from the Physical World – Those friends that are worth a damn will persist through though thick and thin.  Those that aren’t worth a damn?  They’re temporary, and because they have no gratitude in their heart, they always eventually show their true colors.

Take Away – Things are beginning to turn around, and there’s a good deal more energy (and hope) rising in you as you transition from one month to the next.  Focus on practices that encourage a mindset of gratitude, and lean on those that you trust.

Elements in My Practice

The prompt for this reading came from one of the Discord servers I’m a member of.

Prompt: Rank the elements based on how often you use them in your practice/how much you connect with them.

elements

This answer differs depending upon which aspect of my practice that we’re speaking about.  For this reason, I’ve split this post into three different aspects.

Affinities and how I connect to the elements:

earth – This is the element that I’ve always connected with the strongest. Soil and trees, forests and mountains. Plants and growing things. Grounding and stability.

water – I find comfort here, but not stability. As I crave stability over all else, comfort comes in second. There is an emotional attribute here, but not the sharp emotions that survived the eradication during my childhood years. Instead the emotions here are soft and welcoming.

air – Adaptability lives here for me. I can connect to it and bend to it, but I can’t say that it’s exactly comfortable.

fire – Destruction lives here. This is the element that facilitates the changes that hurt the most and make the most room for new things to come in and grow. Being someone who connects with and constantly craves stability, fire and I don’t have the greatest of relationships.

How often I use the elements in my magical practice:

In my magical practice, they all have their place, and each element is included in one manner or another for all of my spellwork. They are a foundation that requires each of them to contribute to create a “whole” spell.

In this magical practice, there is a fifth element that is not present in my list for affinities, for the element of “spirit” is me. Spirit is the spark within me and the spark within others. It’s the individuality that makes each person different, and makes up the threads that connect each and every living (and not living) thing together.

How the elements present in my divination practice:

In divination, the elements represent different aspects of life.  I’ve ordered these in this post in the order of what element is most under our control to what element is least under out control.

earth – The earth element relates to the Pentacles suit in the tarot, and in my divination practice is a representation in divination of the physical world. This includes things like health, hearth and home, money and resources, physical labor, concepts of stability, etc.

air – The air element relates to the Swords suit in the tarot, and in my divination practice is a representation of one’s thoughts, strategies, ambitions, and education. Although our thoughts sometimes run away with us, our plans and strategies are under our control. We choose what we want to learn and plan where we want to go.

water – The water element relates to the Cups suit in the tarot, and in my divination practice is a representation of one’s emotions, intuition, and imagination.  Emotions aren’t really something that we have a lot of control over, and our imagination has a tendency to run wild sometimes, seeping through the cracks just like water has a tendency to do.

fire – The fire element relates to the Wands suit in the tarot, and in my divination practice is a representation of one’s “inner spark”.  This is our quality of inspiration and enthusiasm. We like what we like.  Deep inside we feel what is right or wrong for us.  It’s the home of our values, our motivations, and our passions.

spirit – The “spirit” element relates to the Major Arcana in the suit of tarot, and in my divination practice is a representation of the spiritual. It’s about our life journey, the larger picture, and how elements in that larger picture affect us.

As you can see, although the answer differs depending on the aspect of my practice that we’re talking about?  There is a theme throughout each element that connects them. That is what makes them a foundational part of my practice as a whole.

🌑 New Moon in Scorpio – November 2025

New Moon in Scorpio Tarot Reading with the Unofficial Shel Silverstein Tarot

What am I ready to welcome into my life right now?

Four of Coins atop Eight of Swords – You aren’t feeling particularly ready or welcoming to anything right now. Honestly? You just want to stick your head in the sand and pretend everything is at status quo.

What no longer feels aligned with who l am becoming?

Ace of Wands – You’re feeling particularly uninspired recently, and as a result are worried that that inner spark of creativity within you is sputtering out. You don’t want this misalignment to create a situation where you end up diverted off your chosen path.

What habits or beliefs am I ready to shift or release?

Five of Cups – As you recover from your recent depressive episode, you are trying to shed the dark inner narratives and pessimism that have managed to continue to linger on.

Where do I feel called to begin again?

The Star – You feel the need to connect more strongly with your positivity work, and use it to make the rungs on the ladder less slippery as you climb out of depression’s pit.

What does my soul truly desire in this next cycle?

Seven of Wands – Your soul craves the freedom to stop worrying over how your decisions and actions affect others, believing that you will then be able to be even more authentically yourself.

How can I stay open to possibility and expansion?

Ace of Swords – Communicate your needs. It’s easier to be open to growth and change when your needs are clearly communicated and heard.

Where am I being asked to trust more deeply?

Ace of Coins Rx – It’s okay to pass new opportunities by now and then. Trust in what you already have begun and are working with. No new opportunities are needed for you to have all that you need and live a happy life.

How can I be more intentional with my time, energy, and attention?

King of Cups – Stop giving yourself such a hard time about your mistakes, and be supportive instead.

What would it look like to honor the whispers of my intuition right now?

Queen of Cups – “What he said,” as the Queen glances to the King beside her.
