📆 Transitioning from December to January

Month End Check In Tarot Reading with The Herbal Tarot

Here and Now I Exist – Who you are now, in your entirety.

The Star / Skullcap – Hopeful. In so many aspects of your life at this time, you harbor hope for better things to come. Better health. Better balance. Better stability. A greater sense of calm and connection. These are all things you are hoping for in the months ahead, and those hopes are currently riding at the surface due to the transition into not just a new month but also a new year.

The Slough – What is to be left in the past as you move forward.

Three of Swords / Pleurisy Root – Expel disappointments instead of holding onto them. It isn’t enough to wait them out and hope that things will change on their own. Be proactive in rejecting the rot of depression that disappointment can cause if left untended by giving yourself the attention and care you need during these times.

What Lies Ahead – An ideal state or ideal self you are seeking at this time.

Four of Swords / Mullein – You’re sick and need time to rest and recover. This requires recuperative rest that will allow you to grow strong again. Breathe deep (do your breathing exercises to ensure that fluid doesn’t build up in your lungs) and get the rest you need. Don’t rush it.

Limitations – Negative influences, opposition, or ill will.

The Fool / Ginseng – Make sure as you feel better that you follow the upswing in energy. Don’t linger to wallow in the stillness of leisure because it’s comfortable. This isn’t about rushing, but it is about returning back to hale and healthy on the right foot.

The Boon – Positive influences, higher guidance, or divine intervention.

Strength / Cayenne atop Six of Wands / Hawthorn – Movement is important. It sparks circulation, and when the blood is pumping the body is more open to motivation and movement. Small steps are fine. Don’t let the expectations of others push you to hurry. Just keep moving at your own pace.

The Wound – An unpleasant past experience or event that is ripe for some support and healing.

Temperance / Echinacea – The words people say in anger or while inebriated are not lies. They are unvarnished moments of truth. Those things wouldn’t be said in these uninhibited moments if they didn’t live somewhere in their mind during inhibited ones. Neither alcohol nor anger creates what isn’t already there, it just makes it easier to say those hidden thoughts aloud.

Trust in the truth being shown to you.

Nostalgia – A positive past experience or event to acknowledge, reflect upon, and enjoy.

Queen of Swords / Lady’s Slipper – The truth will set you free. All you have to do is listen and accept.

A Warning – Something coming that can be prevented or overcome.

Two of Cups / Uva Ursi – Watch out for what (or who) might become a disruption otherwise harmonious relationships. Outside influences causing problems need to be gently dealt with. Take care to move on these things with caution and care, instead of your normal “off with their heads” aggression.

Empowerment – A future opportunity to work toward.

King of Pentacles / Alfalfa – Stability requires balance, just like your digestive system. That means stability isn’t about stagnancy, but about building strength through movement. Don’t hunker down and brace for the storm, instead build your agility by facing storms head on and adjusting your stance to stay strong.

Message from the Spirit World – Work with us (spirits and ancestors) and let us lead a bit more in your life, and you will reap the benefits of a greater sense of stability. Not all stability is the result of tight-fisted control.

Message from the Mind’s World – You’ll recover more quickly from moments of disappointment if you continue to focus on your practices in positivity and optimism, and allow yourself time to process your disappointments instead of expecting yourself to be impervious.

Message from the Physical World – Start activity again after your illness with a lean towards enjoyment and a shrewd eye on making sure you’re not going too far or doing too much.

Take Away – There’s lots of stress here on ensuring that you keep moving, even in small ways, both in those things you want to thrive as well as your body as a whole.  It’s time for rest and recovery followed by a slow start back to healthy and hale.  Don’t push, just don’t linger in one place either.

Watch for the revelation of hidden truths.  Don’t disregard them, as people are going to be showing their true colors  around you and you need to pay attention. This doesn’t mean acting rashly on anything learned, just pay attention and gather information. This knowledge could help you out later in putting things in perspective and making priorities.

Tarot Card of the Day Tracking for 2025

Early in this year, I decided to start keeping track of my daily cards. Now, being the curious sort that I am? I would -love- to track all the cards I pull for myself throughout the year, but that project is just a little bit too much for me to handle. So, I settled for tracking my Card of the Day.

In the past when I’ve done this, I’ve used journals or graphs on graph paper, or little graphics in Photoshop where I fill in the circles, etc. It doesn’t really give me a lot of information, though, just looks cool. Because of that, I invariably fall of on the tracking and it ends up forgotten in a corner somewhere.

2026 Tarot Card of the Day Tracker

This year, I created a Tarot Card of the Day Tracker in Notion. Now, keep in mind? I am not that great at databases, spreadsheets, and all that sort of shit. There was a LOT of trial and error, and to be honest? It doesn’t do -everything- that I want it to do. (I’m still trying to tinker with it now and then with my super novice skill levels.)

This allows me to track different aspects of my practice, such as looking at the stats by suit, showing me which suits I pull more of than others throughout the year.  I can change the dates to look at months or other portions of the year as well if I like.

2026 Tarot Card of the Day Tracker- Stats by Suit

It also allows me to see stats by number.  In other words, how many cards of each number value I’ve pulled. With this I can see that I pulled a great number of Fives, Eights, and Kings.  I can extrapolate from that that a big part of this year I was in need of extra support (that’s the focus of my COTD, after all) in the areas of conflict, stability, moderation, and leadership.

2026 Tarot Card of the Day Tracker - Stats by Card Number

By sorting the stats by individual card, I can also see which cards I pulled most often, and those I pulled the least. In this graph, for example, I can clearly see that my least pulled card this year was the Four of Swords and Knight of Swords, all the other 76 cards got pulled at least twice throughout the year. The Eight of Pentacles, Five of Cups, and Queen of Wands were each pulled a total of nine times, the most out of any of the other cards in the deck.

2026 Tarot Card of the Day Tracker - Stats by Card

As a whole, I’m pretty happy with this. And, because I like to look at pictures, I also added views that allow me to look back on the images of the cards pulled each day, as well as an included “deck gallery” for the decks I used in my daily card practice.

So, what would I change?

Not a lot.  I’d like to see some sort of full year view in a layout similar to the 2021 Calendar view I did in the past.  I’d also like to be able to add future years to the views for each of the stats pages.  That way I could keep up the results of 2025 on display, with the new graph for each view also on the page for comparison (perhaps one above the other).  I’ve not quite figured this stuff out yet. (Any Notion wizards out there that want to help?  I’m not adverse to help!) 💀

Creative Practice Activity with the Sun and Moon Tarot in a Tin

Note: I chose to pull the cards for this practice through random shuffle instead of picking them out.

A Christmas Gift Gone Wrong

Ace of Pentacles – Jack knew that the main motivation for his father-in-law to offer him the ER position as a Christmas gift was so that he wouldn’t be able to spend as much time with Clare.  Not to mention it means he has to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, which prevents him from joining Clare and her family on Christmas.  It’s still a good job, though!  A prime opportunity for advancement, too.

And it turns out?  He gets to see Clare and her family anyway, as dear old dad stubbornly tried to climb a ladder to fix a burnt out stringer of lights on the house (instead of letting Jack take care of it when he gets off work), and now they’re all here in the ER with Jack to enjoy Christmas as a family after all.

A Walk In Winter Snow at Night

The Emperor –   Filled with pride, Mr Fitzgerald walks down his street looking at all the home decorations on the houses of all his neighbors.  With so much going on this year and finances being strapped, a lot of people weren’t going to decorate this year.  He pulled them all together, though, and helped where he could.    In the end, everyone  ended up decorating.

None of it is over the top, but everyone joined in with him at the helm to help keep things organized.  Now, as he walks and enjoys the view on Christmas Eve, his boots crunch in the snow and the cold nips his nose, but soon other boots join in as the neighbors come together again to enjoy the beauty they’ve created, trailing after him along the sidewalk and chattering words of admiration and encouragement among themselves as they move from home to home.

A Perfect New Years Evening

The Empress – Sometimes you just have to create some boundaries and take a night for yourself, and that’s exactly what Marjorie is doing on this special night.   With a bath tub filled with nice warm water and bubbles, a book to read, and relaxing music playing, she relaxes in a house that had been filled with noise since the eve of Christmas Eve until just a few hours ago.

Now, with everyone out to ring in the new year, she has the house all to herself and quiet reigns as she takes a sip of her wine then reaches for the plate sitting on the edge of the tub with the bit of chocolate cake waiting for her to enjoy.  Leaning back into the warmth of the water and tickle of bubbles with a decadent sigh of pleasure.

Winter Solstice 2025 – Yule

Tomorrow is the Winter Solstice! This holiday is (in essence) the Pagan equivalent to Christmas. Fun fact… when Christmas was placed on December 25th, the church chose that day to coincide with the pagan holiday of Yule (because as most know, Christ was actually born in the spring, not in December).

Although many of us have been feeling like we’ve been in it for months, the Winter Solstice is the “official” first day of winter, and marks  its spot on the calendar not by its date, but by being one of only two days each year where the daylight and darkness are equal.  In my path, this holiday marks a day of hope for the future, and candles are lit to celebrate the return of the sun as it begins to now become more and more prominent with each day that passes and every day becomes longer as the nights decrease.

Christmas Socks

Like with new moons and full moons, I usually do a spread to check in with myself and give myself some direction for the next couple of months for each solstice, equinox, and other Sabbats. This spread is an adaptation of my Self Care Saturday spread, so there are some similarities in how it is read. The focus of this spread, though, is not about Self Care, but rather about progress and my path. The time period is also longer, reaching through the next handful of weeks until the celebration of upcoming Imbolc at the beginning of February.

Theme of the SeasonYule / Licht in der Dunkelheit, New Moon, Coriander (Ceriandrum sativum)

Yule (Light in the Darkness) is a time when we celebrate that the light is to beginning to once more return to us.  From now until mid-summer, each day will be longer and each night shorter.  With the longer days and the return of the sun, the earth will begin to warm and awaken.  This returning of the light is the very first step towards warmer weather, spring, and rebirth.

This year the Winter Solstice lands on the waning end of the New Moon. The New Moon is a time of beginnings, when we take the ideas we have been fostering in the back of our mind and bring them forward to prioritize and begin to encourage to grow. Planning is the first step to acting on one’s dreams, and the new moon encourages us to plot and plan to our heart’s content concerning those things most important to us, and that we want to accomplish or achieve.

Coriander (Ceriandrum sativum) is is metaphysically used to stimulate bold energies, awaken passions, and protect through clearing away issues with jealousy, ill will, and stagnant energies. Added to this, in areas of health, coriander is a source of vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. It is an antioxidant that is believed to assist in lowering blood pressure through its diuretic properties. Its essential oil also contains antibacterial properties.

When looking at these three cards together there is a pervasive message that speaks of a need to let go of those things that are “poisoning the well”  as the new beginnings that come with the Winter Solstice and New Year approach.   As the light grows, commit to allowing it to burn away the negative influences of ill will and stagnancy, so that the light can invigorate and heal.

EarthNine of Cups – Savor more. Work at living in the moment, and enjoying those moments to the best of your ability.  Seek out those things that make you happy and make the choice to enjoy them rather than brushing them aside for aspirations.  That time spent savoring creates a stability that all  your striving never can.

AirKnight of Swords Rx – Watch out for moments of impulsiveness. Take care to make sure that you’re taking a pause and actually thinking things through before you act. This especially includes before you speak, particularly if you’re jumping forward to speak out of turn.

WaterSeven of Cups – Don’t allow your emotions to get involved in making decisions, or you may find yourself stuck and unable to choose which way to go. Logic is needed, and when emotions get involved, sometimes logic becomes harder to ascertain… or harder to actually choose out right.

FireTwo of Pentacles – Lean into focusing on creating a good balance in your life between the opposing forces within you. Remember that balance is not stagnancy. It requires movement in order to be achieved and sustained.

WaningThe Dusk Child and Roots – “A balanced view relies on the acceptance of obscurity, just as a healthy tree relies on the nourishment of the black soil.” – Guidebook

It is best to linger on the surface for the time being, and allow the light to do the healing work that it needs to do for you. You’ve spent enough time in the dark, and your inner balance needs the light just as trees need sunlight.   Your roots are oversaturated.

WaxingThe Oracle and Scythe – Lean into the development of your intuitive abilities. Although logic is a solid foundation for making decisions, it shouldn’t trump the knowledge that comes from within.  Even without proof, that knowledge holds the high ground through its consistency at being right.

Take Away – Recommit yourself to the light as the warmth of the sun’s return burns through the darkness this Winter Solstice.  You need to focus more on your mindfulness, positivity, and optimism exercises to balance yourself out, and allow yourself to trust your moments of intuition without question.  Just take care not to mistake impulse for intuition. They’re not the same and the former can cause a lot of extra problems you don’t need.

🌑 New Moon in Sagittarius – December 2025

New Moon in Sagittarius tarot reading with the X'mas Elf Tarot

CLEARING: What sensitive areas have I poked and prodded enough for now?

Three of Pentacles – You’ve done really well at including those in your life more in dealing with your responsibilities. Teamwork is going well right now and there’s no need to keep picking at it for the time being. You’ve noticed this in the delegation of housework, daily tasks, and order processing of late.

TRANSITIONAL PAUSE: How has diving deep inspired me to look far and wide for my next journey?

Queen of Wands – Even when you are unenthused, you still need to keep moving. This is something that you’ve struggled with ever since you started exploring your emotions more in depth. As a result, you are coming to an understanding that even when your emotions are low, it is no excuse for not giving yourself the support you need; and that it’s through continuing on in creative endeavors that you enjoy that you are able to pull yourself out of these slumps.

NEW SEEDS: What mind-expanding experiences are made possible by boldness?

The Hanged Man – When you allow yourself to explore different angles of perspective, it gives you a far more expensive experience and understanding then you would otherwise receive. Sometimes these moments allow you to get a peek at the truth that you were trying to deny, while other times they allow you to see the truth in others that they are trying to hide.

LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS: How does constantly shifting allow me to find my flow?

Five of Swords – “Flow” is all about movement. When you remain still, things become stagnant and there is no “flow”. Stagnancy is toxic and promotes decay. It takes time to climb out of and recover from it once it’s managed to set in. You’ve found that it’s better to keep moving, even if you’re moving blindly, than to stand still and let the stagnancy gather around you.

PLANETARY BOON: What good fortune awaits discovery?

Eight of Cups – By sticking things out instead of giving up and walking away, sometimes those things that have you wanting to walk away will turn around, and you’ll find that you don’t need to move on after all.  It’s all about picking and choosing which things you decide to take a chance on, and if you’re okay with it not turning out… because sometimes that can happen too.

New Moon advice from the Minoan Goddess Amalthea.

Knight of Swords – Keep going. Just because things feel uncertain now and then doesn’t mean it’s time to put down the sword and stop fighting.

Goat Figurine as Sympathetic Representation of Amalthea

🌕 Full Moon in Gemini – December 2025

Full Moon in Gemini Tarot Reading with The Myth Weaver Tarot

How am I deluding myself?

Ace of Swords Rx (Excalibur) – The “strong silent type” is a myth you need to remember not to buy into. Communication is key to healthy, strong, stable relationships with others. The adage that “sharing is caring” holds truth, and not just in sharing resources, but also in sharing your thoughts, emotions, and ideas with others.

What am I missing?

Eight of Cups Rx (Tane) – Movement. In a previous reading you did, it was made clear that movement of any kind is better than stagnancy and the creeping in of depression that stagnancy brings with it. Don’t allow yourself to sit in stagnancy right now, as you are just coming out of depressions pit, which leaves you vulnerable to falling back in again.

What perceptions need to be shifted?

Justice / The Measure (Maat) – Remember that sometimes fair does not look like fairness, and balance does not always look like balance. Sometimes there are things going on outside of your perception that make these things (fairness and balance) work even without appearing as if they should.

What requires further investigation?

Tower / The Ruin (Medusa) – You haven’t yet delved into all of the possibilities and opportunities that have been presented to you through the chaos and destruction that took place in the past few months. Don’t just write this experience off as a loss and leave it as that. Seek out the boon and those opportunities hidden among the rubble.

What possibilities are ready to show themselves?

Page / Seeker of Cups (Selkie) – You are being given the opportunity to learn to see things in a new perspective when it comes to the destruction wrought by chaos. Instead of allowing your emotions to take control and send you careening off the walls, these moments help you learn how to process those anxieties and emotions instead, so that you can shed them and keep moving.

Full Moon advice from the Minoan Goddess Amalthea.

World / The Sacred Return (Quetzalcōātl) – It’s time to focus on beginning again, carrying forward with you the lessons that you have learned thus far. Leave behind you the journey and the struggles of the past year, take with you the lessons and start anew. Look at the new year to come as a fresh start and begin the process of letting go in order to allow that to happen more smoothly.

Other elements included in this reading:
Carved Rhyolite Leaf for Facilitating Calm Transitions
Foraged Acorns for Protection during New Beginnings
Goat Figurine as Sympathetic Representation of Amalthea
Selenite for Purification and drawing in Positive Energy
