I wander
through the woods
and the towering
trees
peer down at me
with falling leaves
that litter my hair
and as I move
from tree to tree
upon the trail
there is a
not so silent
stalker
that follows along
from
branch to branch
The sun sets
red and angry
setting the world
ablaze as
land burns
in the east
to tinge fresh air
with the scents
of smoke
and
as the sun
sinks
we all
pray for rain
Morning light
peeks over
hillsides
standing proud
and rays of light
shine down
to kiss the fields
gone to rest
as last harvests
come to a close
and the ground
is prepared
for the cold
and the wet
of winter’s kiss
Weather cools
and clouds roll in
as long summer
finally breaks
and blue skies
are concealed
the air clearing
of wildfire smoke
as raindrops fall
and the world
is cleansed
of the cloying
touch
of summer’s
tenuous grip
I don’t want
to fold in
on myself
and curl close
into a tight bud
alone
and scared
but instead
wish to unfurl
and let you see
all of me
to the very core
and claim me
yours
Clouds dance
like waves
rippling along
a surface
of rich blue
as rising sun
flirts with
horizon’s edge
not yet ready
to crest
and burn away
the seafoam
of the sky
