Wrung Out
when back spasms
so close to quitting
and legs wobble
with weakness
of pressure on nerves
that shouldn’t
be pressed
the time comes
to make the choice
to sit down
or fall down
for the body
won’t break
but it will reach
a point
where it will simply
quit
Relief
leaves whisper
in excitement
as autumn slips
through the fingers
of summer’s grip
like sand
and color pops
from branches
until leaves
are released
to flutter away
finally free
Aching
curled close
my face
nuzzles into
matted fur
as I coil around
the weighed body
in a hue
of autumn leaves
and swallow
back tears
as I struggle
with overwhelm
and the
lingering ache
of missing you
Mellow
lets sit
and watch
the eagles
circle
as they seek
their supper
and we share
the bottle
between us
as we wait
for the sun
to set.
Anticipatory
rosehips
swell in
autumn’s call
as petals
fall away
and the
softness
of blooms
gives way
to the
hard knots
of fall
announcing
decay
is on the way
Impatience
lace edged
clusters of white
dance among
whispers
of gray
as the season
shifts
and yet
there’s still
no promise
of rain
