Witching Hour
The porch light
goes out
and the candles
are doused
and as
children’s laughter
is replaced
by nighttime silence
the decorations
come down
and it feels like
goodbye
with an ache
of sadness
that another year
must pass
before it all begins
again
Candy Day
So much
excitement
and
so much fun
all rolled
into one night
as evening
comes
and the
doorbell rings
and the candy
begins
to flow
Big Orange
The box arrives
with a friend
inside
that I’m eager
to greet
and with
tearing paper
and keys
splitting tape
bright orange
is revealed
and he’s bought
into the light
and welcomed
home
The Exhale
For a moment
the world
exhales
and the tension
of summer heat
gone on
too long
is released
to wash the hills
in hues
of golden glow
as leaves
begin to fall
Pop of Color
A smile radiant
in a world
of gray
as raindrops fall
and drip
from the tips
of long strands
beading
upon skin
and yet all
that can be heard
is joy and laughter
Indecision
Rain promised
and sunshine
delivered
as clouds skate
across
an expanse
of blue
and indecision
reigns
to offer
sweeping views
in an evening sky
