First Harvest 2025 – Lammas/Lughnasadh

Today is the First Harvest of the year. This day marks the transition into the harvest season of August, September, and October (of which there is a Second Harvest and Last Harvest that correspond to these months).

Wheat Field

This holiday is often called Lammas, Lughnasadh, or Lugh, although I usually just refer to it as the First Harvest. On my path, it celebrates the beginning of Summer’s decline and ramping up of the busy season where we begin to reap in the abundance that the bounty of summer’s energies has encouraged to grow and flourish.

Like with new moons and full moons, I usually do a spread to check in with myself and give myself some direction for the next couple of months for each solstice, equinox, and other Sabbats. This spread is an adaptation of my Self Care Saturday spread, so there are sure to be  some similarities in how it is read. The focus of this spread, though, is not about Self Care, but rather about progress and my path. The time period is also longer, reaching through the next handful of weeks until the celebration of the upcoming Second Harvest (aka. Mabon, Autumnal Equinox) in September.

Lughnasadh / Last Harvest Reading with the Pagan Otherworlds Tarot, Compendium of Witches Oracle, and Healing Herbal Deck

Theme of the SeasonLughnasadh, First Quarter Moon, Grass Lily (Ornithogalum umbellatum)

Lughnasadh is a harvest festival of Celtic origins with a theme that has to do with competition, hard work, and bounty.  Lammas (aka. Loaf Mass Day) is a Christian festival that centered around gratitude and blessings.  The themes are different, but in my practice they are combined, which is why I prefer to call this holiday the “First Harvest”, as I feel it connects to both the gratitude and abundance, as wel as the hard work that this part of the season involves.

Half way between the New Moon and upcoming Full moon, the First Quarter Moon is a time to look at the intentions we set and began working toward with the New Moon’s cycle, and reassess how things are going. This is a time of action and adaptation as we apply determination to our goal and move forward, pouring our energies into those things we are working to accomplish during this moon’s cycle. Energy is building as we move toward the Full Moon, and at this time utilizing that energy is the name of the game.

Metaphysically speaking, Grass Lily (Ornithogalum umbellatum) symbolizes innocence, purity, honesty, hope, and forgiveness; and can be used to help in dealing with the shock of loss.  In medical circles, it has been researched for use in heart medication to lower blood pressure, strengthen the pulse, and discharge excess fluid in those that struggle to tolerate digitoxin based treatments.

When looking at these three cards together…

EarthTemperance atop Eight of Wands Rx – Times of rushing and pushing need moderation, but so too do times when things are moving slow. Otherwise, these slow times turn from slow but healthy movement into stagnancy and decay. Don’t jump the gun, and don’t freeze in place. You need to breathe through the uncertainty, and “thread the needle” between the two extremes one step at a time.

AirQueen of Wands – Direct your focus to the things that you were passionate about, and you have influence over. There’s no point in worrying about the things that you have no ability to change or influence, instead work on those things that you can and do.

WaterFive of Swords Rx – It really isn’t surprising that you’re feeling a sense of defeat at this time. With everything that’s going on in the world right now and how much of it affects you personally, it can be a struggle to keep your head above water and not just give up. This is understandable and these emotions absolutely influence your spiritual well-being. Take time to reflect back upon the Earth position (above) in this reading and keep going anyway. There is grounding to be had by reaching for the shore.

FireAce of Swords – It may take some clever thinking (and possibly some clever doing) to keep things on track right now. This can be helped by communicating what you want to happen to others and listening to their ideas as well. All ideas are good ideas when it feeds your brain, and can possibly give you a new perspective and shake something loose that could be useful.

WaningThe Seer and Moon – Ungrounded divination is not the way to go right now.  Make sure you are getting the grounding and centering you need before flirting with the veil.  Natural affinities need strong foundations too.

WaxingThe Veil Walker and Distaff – It is time to claim your power by beginning the process of establishing boundaries in your mediumship practice. Moving further along this path, you will need protections in place in order to help in bolstering your strength.

Take Away – Much of what’s said in this reading are an an echo of my month’s end reading, which isn’t surprising since they are overlapping a bit in the issues I’m running into in life right now. The advice here is to make sure you are staying on top of balancing your need to fix things and your need to retreat from the unknown. The anxiety in this tug of war is causing you to be vulnerable in your spiritual practice in ways that you usually aren’t.  Make sure you are taking care to uphold your boundaries, and let yourself get lost in the things you enjoy for a bit of relief from the stress.

First Harvest Oracle Reading with the Seasons of the Witch Lammas Oracle

Seeds Sown – What seeds for my physical health & growth planted in the Spring have flourished and grown strong?

Welcoming the Harvest – You have gotten back on track with your eating schedule, ensuring no hypoglycemic episodes and helping in staying off the irrational scarcity feelings that start to crop up in all areas of life when you start trying to cut back on food intake.

The Chaff – What seeds for my physical health & growth have not flourished and need to be let go to encourage healthy growth in other areas?

Harvest Basket – You are still struggling to carry too much on your shoulders. In order to continue with healthy physical progress in areas where you are thriving, you need to work on letting go of taking on too much on your own.

The Harvest – How can I best prepare now to reap the benefits of a positive healthy harvest for my physical health & growth in the Fall?

Craftsmanship – Work on honing your craft and toughening up your hands and forearms for the overwork that will come as the holiday season comes into focus. Build up that strength and endurance now so you won’t be injured later.

Seeds Sown – What seeds for my mental health & growth planted in the Spring have flourished and grown strong?

Fennel – You have been working on fretting less and trusting that you will get through obstacles instead of decimated by them. With your emotions in play (as you try not to bury them and ignore them), it’s difficult to not be affected more intensely by setbacks and hurdles. You are doing well at learning how to not let your anxiety spiral in these instances, and instead focusing on solution based thoughts and plans.

The Chaff – What seeds for my mental health & growth  have not flourished and need to be let go to encourage healthy growth in other areas?

Coneflower – You don’t need any more independence than you already have. Quit trying to scrape up more. You need to instead focus on allowing others in and asking for help, even in times when you feel you don’t need to.

The Harvest – How can I best prepare now to reap the benefits of a positive healthy harvest for my mental health & growth in the Fall?

Rooster and Hens – Get out in nature and enjoy time outside among the trees, exploring new trails and old alike. Revisit the joy that noticing natures little changes from one day to the next gives you. These excursions help create clarity of mind, and revitalize you both in mind and body.

Seeds Sown – What seeds for my emotional health & growth planted in the Spring have flourished and grown strong?

Citrine – The confidence you have gained over the past few months is of the gentle and uplifting sort. You are discovering that confidence in others and your connection to them is just as important as independence and having confidence in yourself.

The Chaff – What seeds for my emotional health & growth  have not flourished and need to be let go to encourage healthy growth in other areas?

Garden Tools – You are not on your own and (yet again in this reading) you are being reminded that independence doesn’t mean you have to cut yourself off from others. That right there is the line where independence becomes unhealthy.

The Harvest – How can I best prepare now to reap the benefits of a positive healthy harvest for my emotional health & growth in the Fall?

Vegetable Garden – Touch base with yourself and your progress. Make sure that those seeds that need to flourish are doing so and thriving, and that the weeds of unhealthy thoughts and old habits that could choke them out are being pulled and discarded.

Lughnasadh Tarot Reading with the White Neuman Tarot

What skill have you grown that will best serve you?

The Devil Rx – Resisting temptation and being more discerning in indulging in your addictions.

What is still ripening and needs time to further mature?

Nine of Pentacles – Learning to appreciate your accomplishments and those things in life that make you feel fortunate, rather than ignoring them for the negative viewpoint or your ambitions.

What needs to be sacrificed/released for you to prosper?

Ten of Wands – Stop trying to do everything. It’s too much. If you don’t want to drop it all and screw it all up, you need to start selectively lightening your burden where you can.

Will your current path serve you well as we prepare for the darker months?

Page of Wands Rx – Not really… No. You need to be open to learning a different way to getting to what you really want.

What do you need to focus on between now and the autumnal equinox to prepare?

Eight of Wands Rx – Make sure you are taking things slow. You still have plenty of time to prepare for the holiday rush, and there’s no need to push yourself right now.

The GIfts of Our Ancestors

Biological Illustration Tarot and Thera-Pets Emotional Support Animal CardsToday’s meditation was supposed to be twelve minutes long, and take place in the backseat of the car I was riding in.  It ended up being about eight minutes long before I dozed off in said back seat and had myself an impromptu little nap.  The topic of the meditation was “you are worth taking care of” which, no surprises here, is a message that I often struggle with.

It’s hard to remember that I’m worth taking care of when my inclinations toward self-destruction are so strong.  It was a good reminder to put in the effort to be kind to myself, though, and consciously choose to provide for my needs instead of ignoring them.

Today’s draw is the Page of Wands, which is traditionally a representation of a receptive omega energy, personality, or person in the area of one’s willpower, drive, passions, and inner spark.

What stands out to me in this card is that the bird is facing to the past instead of the future.  The issue being that sometimes?  We aren’t inspired by the future or what we can do in the present.  Sometimes?  It’s in the past that we find inspiration.  In the art of our ancestors, their words or their skills, their actions and their gifts.

The message in today’s card is that in times when you simply can’t find inspiration in the present or the future?  Look to the past for what you seek.

Questions for June 13th thru 15th – Sense

Biological Illustration Tarot and Spirit Animal OracleHow can I use the wisdom of the natural world to guide me in making important life decisions?

Four of Cups and Sloth – Don’t neglect the time needed to do your meditation. Make it a priority, even when you are tapped out and struggling to keep up. Force the world to move at your speed, instead of putting off or discarding that which is important.

What lessons can I learn from the cycles and seasons of nature to enhance my personal growth?

Page of Swords and Spider – Learn to observe and explore the ebb and flow of your creative energies instead of expecting to pull them up and pour them into anything at any time. Your creative energy is not constant, just as the cycles of nature create times of rest and times of growth.

What signs and synchronicities can I look for in nature that will guide me towards my purpose?

The Hermit and Swan – Make sure that your alone times are of the healthy variety and not spent indulging in your unhealthy tendency to lean into isolation.

Biological Illustration TarotReading Summary: It’s time to let go (Death) of the stubborn closed-mindedness that prevent you (The Hanged Man) from appreciating your accomplishments and how far you’ve come (Nine of Pentacles).

Take Away: Taking yourself for granted is a habit that leaves you always pushing yourself for far more than is healthy.  Although a difficult and long-term goal in your life, it’s important that you don’t lose focus on taking time to appreciate the journey and your strength as you travel along life’s path.  Give yourself credit where credit is due instead of always pushing that appreciation aside in an effort to accomplish even more.

First Harvest 2022 – Lammas

Today is Lammas, which is known as the First Harvest of the year. This day marks the transition into the harvest season of August, September, and October (of which there is a Second Harvest and Last Harvest that correspond to these months).

Lammas Tarot Reading for the First Harvest with the Pagan Otherwords Tarot, Compendium of Witches Oracle, and Herbal Healing Oracle Deck Vol 1 & 2

Theme of the SeasonLammas, Waxing Crescent Moon, Elder (Sambucus nigra)

In this card a woman dances among sunflowers, celebrating in her harvest with the product of her labors cradled close under one arm and boline in the other hand ready to reap what she’s sown. There is pride in the angle of her jaw and tilt of her head, strength in her posture, and voluptuous elegance in her form.

The Waxing Crescent Moon is a symbol of growth, creativity, and attainment and welcomes the energies of positivity and expansion into one’s life.  It is a time for welcoming in new habits, new themes, and for leaning forward into changes that you wish to control the direction of with your actions and will.

The Elder (Sambucus nigra) is a tree of transitions and change, guarding liminal spaces and providing purification and protection within the transitional places that we travel between. The dried bits of this plant can be used for spellwork involving physical and emotional healing, as well as hex breaking, purification, and protection.

When looking at these three cards together, the theme that I see here is one of healing through progress.  You are at a place in your life and upon your physical path where you have choices to make and these cards encourage you to lean hard into positivity and optimism.  Don’t allow yourself to step out of the light, but instead take an active role in making sure your harvests this year are abundant and plentiful.

EarthFour of Wands – You are comfortable and relaxed in your path forward at this time. You know what needs done and have a solid plan as your foundation.  Use this energy to carry you toward your goals rather than wallowing in the comfort in more languid ways.

AirNine of Swords – Careful that you don’t let your worries become hurdles that hold you back.  Negative thoughts and a pessimistic inner dialogue won’t help you in making progress at this time.  Better to set these things aside so that you can move more freely and continue to charge forward toward your goals.

WaterThe Moon Rx – Moments of uncertainty can feed into negativity. Make sure that you are not giving uncertainty the chance to grow and thrive in your life. If you have to “fake it ’til you make it”?  Do so.

FireKnight of Pentacles – Business is slow right now and that’s a good thing.  Don’t become restless during the lull, but instead use this time wisely on other things.  It won’t last forever and you want to work on what you can get done now so that when things pick back up you can feel a sense of accomplishment from the slow season.

WaningThe Memory and Pruning – It’s time to set aside self reflection and deep exploration of inner thoughts and feelings. Action is needed, and you can’t stand in stillness and mull things over, and -also- act at the same time.

WaxingThe Explorer and Mirror – Movement and knowing yourself.  This is the theme you need to lean into at this time.  You know what you want and need, and it’s time to take the steps and action to reach the fulfillment you seek.

That Moment of Relief

#DailyCalm from the Calm appToday’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was another of the guided #DailyCalm sessions through the Calm app.

Ethereal Alchemist Tarot - Ten of SwordsToday’s draw is the Ten of Swords, which is traditionally a representation of painful endings, coming to the end of an unpleasant journey, backstabbing, and finding the “end of one’s rope”.

Here in this card’s imagery I see a wasteland. A wasteland at the end of a great battle. All swords have found earth, and no life remains. No one is getting up from this to keep fighting… the fight is at an end.

And here in lies the message.  The fight is at an end.  Take a moment.  Take a breath.  Feel that moment of relief as your burdens are set down and your muscles can ease their tension. The worst is now behind you.  In my case, for today, this message refers to my depression.  I can feel myself improving each day.  I am beginning to leave the darkness at the depths of the pit behind as I climb my way out.

Questions for…

Hollow Valley Tarot and Spirit Animal OracleThe Emperor – Day 7

What is something I should master in support of myself?

Frog Spirit – How to let go of the things that don’t matter is an important skill to support yourself and one that you need to work on mastering. Too often you hold on too tightly to those things you need to let go of, whether that be negative inner dialogue, bad habits, or sentimental items that you develop an emotional (or addictive) attachment to.

How can I use what I’ve mastered in in the past support of my Journey?

Rabbit Spirit – You know how to turn things around into your favor, and find the boon in bad situations. Instead of seeing struggle and problems as defeat, you see them as lessons. Hurdles instead of dead ends, mountains instead of impenetrable walls. Surmountable, with something to gain in the process.

The Hierophant – Day 8

What guidance is the Universe offering me for my Journey?

Hummingbird Spirit – Spend more of your time focusing in the present, instead of reflecting on the past or prospecting on the future. There is a lot that you have healed from in your past, and a lot planned for the future, but when you focus on either one of them too much, you miss out on all that’s good in the present.

In what area can seeking / applying {old} knowledge help me?

Cow Spirit – Positivity, optimism, and hope are positive influences that can lift you up and improve your life if you are willing to lean into that theme. You’ve seen proof of just  how well this method can work, but you have to actually focus on it and allow it in.
