Sometimes
the surface speaks
of what’s
underneath
and sometimes
it is merely
a small display
of what’s
hidden from sight
and the problem is
we never know
which is which
until we dive in
to be swept up
or pulled under
poetry

No gloves
just dirt
wrist deep
under the nails
and in the grooves
of fingerprints
as hands dig deep
in rich soil
to give life
a new start
and introduce
what will bloom
to it’s new home

hiding at home
with the curtains
closed
and the ceiling fan on
the invite feels
unwelcome
and is turned down
at first
until
they speak of flavors
and baked shrimp
appetizers
then
it’s time to go

tepid
about you and I
as even moments
of quiet tenderness
turns to wild fire
with a single spark
or breathless gasp
and temptation wins
as again
we become distracted
with each other
and the chemistry
between us

and new topsoil
days of work
and lots of toil
brand new seed
scattered ’round
a full refresh
for healthy ground
one thoughtless man
on wet grass
ruins it all
just that fast
damage control
desperately needed
and then the lawn
again needs reseeded
