Today’s meditation was eleven minutes long, and was one of the #DailyCalm sessions in the Calm app. Honestly? I’ve been using this app since it first came out, and I have to say that I was really leery of subscribing to it (it’s not cheap, after all) for  years, but it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made as far as apps are concerned.  They’ve put a -lot- into the app over the years and it’s hands-down my favorite app to use for meditation… even on days like today when I can’t for the life of me remember a single thing that was said during the session.

Today’s card is the Ten of Pentacles combined with the affirmation “Hey friend, I know the self loathing feels productive, but life is just too hard to justify you being a butt toward yourself today.”

Right, so… Growing up, perfectionism was something to be expected. And that expectation then became internalized… which in turn turned into self-loathing, self-cruelty, and a really vicious negative inner narrative whenever you don’t live up to what are essentially impossible expectations.

The cards today are a reminder that those expectations are, in fact, impossible.  And that instead of spending your time poking and prodding yourself into trying to satisfy them, you need to take more time to look around at what you’ve accomplished in your life and how you have built a life that includes others who love you and depend on you as well as a foundation that is steady beneath not just your feet… but theirs too.

Does it look like that impossible expectation you try to berate yourself into accomplishing?  No.  It’s better… because it’s all yours.  A perfect fit for you and those important to you, which is much better than trying to wear a shoe that belongs to someone else.

Today’s card is the Page of Cups combined with the affirmation “You deserve a good life.”

The affirmation in today’s cards begs the question… what -is- a good life?

I feel that the answer to this is different for everyone. It’s entirely subjective, and is up to our imagination to explore and define.  Together with the Page of Cups, the message in today’s cards is about going after one’s dreams and allowing yourself to dream of the future instead of plugging along in the monotony of constant struggle.

We can achieve what we dream for ourselves, and have our own personal version of a good life… but only if we’re actually willing to dream it, and allow ourselves to see those dreams as something we deserve.

Today’s card is the Ten of Wands combined with the “Evening” card that speaks of taking time to unwind from hard days and let yourself relax and recover.

The Ten of Wands is about overwhelm.  It’s about taking on so much that we just cannot take on any more, and the burnout that can come from that overwhelm.  It’s that last straw… the one that breaks the camel’s back.

The combination of the Evening card with the Ten of Wands is a reminder that to stave off burnout, we need down time.  We need time to unwind and take a breath, to set down our burdens and let ourselves recover from the overwhelm.

These cards are an encouragement to do just that, and a reminder that we’re all human… we all have only two arms and two legs.  Don’t put so much on your plate that you can no longer take the recovery time you need, or pretty soon you won’t be able to carry any of it at all.

Seven of Cups combined with the affirmation “Being overwhelmed doesn’t mean you’re weak or incapable. We just need a long while to recharge sometimes.”

You may insist in your heart of hearts that you do not need rest and recuperation, but the truth of the matter is that it is a universal fact for all humans.  The more you ignore it, the worse it will get, until the need for rest is so intense and has grown so great that those short rests you could have taken will no longer cut it, and a longer rest is needed.

This is the consequence of ignoring your needs and choosing to see those needs as an obstacle instead of an intrinsic part of being human.  Instead, take care to rest when you need to and give yourself the time you need to recover from life’s trials.  These needs aren’t really up to you, and ignoring them will just make things worse.

Today’s card is the Two of Pentacles combined with the affirmation ” You aren’t ‘too much’ of anything. You are just right as you are.”

I do not usually struggle with the feeling of being “too much” for others. In fact, I swing the other way entirely and struggle with feelings of inadequacy and being not enough.  Either way, though, the “You are just right as you are” part of the affirmation hits home, and combined with the Two of Pentacles is a reminder that you can only juggle so much in life before things fall out of balance.

You don’t have to constantly strive to be more and do more.  People will love you just as you are, without all that “extra” that you are always pushing so hard for.  Don’t let those feelings of inadequacy, (that are actually all in your head, mind you) upset your balance.

Today’s card is the Seven of Pentacles combined with the affirmation “There’s no room for any self-hate today; you are too beautiful and too precious.”

Today’s cards are a reminder that learning to not listen to your negative inner narrative is a type of growth, and like most growth that really matters?  It’s going to take time. You’ve had decades to learn how to be cruel to yourself, and it’s going to take decades to learn how to be kind to yourself.  Just keep going, every day, one step at a time, one millimeter at a time.  You’ll get there if you keep working at it instead of giving in to those negative thoughts every time they crop up.

Today’s meditation was skipped.

Today’s card is the Two of Pentacles combined with the affirmation “Float. Feel the air around you. Let the universe cradle you for a while.”

Sometimes, the constant juggling of responsibilities and “things to get done” can be exahusting. During those times, it really doesn’t matter how many things are involved. It could be just one small thing, a dozen small things, two big things… it doesn’t matter.  It all starts to feel like too much, growing into this huge undertaking.

The cards in today’s pull are a reminder that it’s okay to ease up on the reigns now and then, especially when feeling overwhelmed.  If you let go and just “float” for a while? It won’t be the end of the world, and you’ll not just feel better for having done so, but return to those responsibilities refreshed and far more capable of dealing with them.

Today’s card is the Seven of Wands combined with the affirmation “No negativity today; You’re gettin’ stuff done!”

Don’t let other’s naysaying and obstructive behaviors cause you to steer off-path.  You have certain things you need to get done today, and their negativity will only be a distraction that makes everything more difficult and take that much longer to accomplish.

Instead, just keep your head down and fight for what you want to accomplish and what’s important to you.  Let the rest slide off, and only push back as much as needed when it’s necessary to do so.

Today’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was one of the #DailyCalm sessions from the Calm app. The topic of the meditation for today was how to deal with repressed emotions, including those that might become repressed if not dealt with in the moment.  The advice in this session really boiled down to not allowing yourself to push said emotions away, but rather sitting with them and dealing with the situations that create them in the moment instead.

Today’s card is the Page of Pentacles combined with the affirmation “The negative voice in your head isn’t worth your concern. No need to care. Haters gonna hate.”

My progress on learning the skills needed to combat my negative inner narrative has been slow going.

Really. Slow. Going.

That isn’t to say that I haven’t made progress. I have!  Just not at all the type of progress I’m used to managing when working on something.  The Page of Pentacles today is a reminder that sometimes things have to be taken slow, and that in taking them slow, they become far more permanent than if you’d rushed at putting them in place.   Patience is important, and taking things at a slower pace does not equate with failure, no matter how hard those that raised you tried to teach you otherwise.

Today’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was one of the #DailyCalm sessions from the Calm app. The topic of today’s meditation was a story about a man in a hut with no door that is trying to meditate, and a stray cat keeps coming in and climbing into his lap. Every time, he gets up and puts the cat back out, and every time he sits down the cat comes back again. This goes on for a half hour or more. Eventually, he gives up and decides to just sit with it.  The cat comes in, sits in his lap for perhaps a full minute, then gets up and wanders off on its own.

The lesson here being that sometimes meditation is about just sitting with it, whatever “it” might be. Not pushing it away or trying to ignore whatever “it” is, whether it be emotions or discomfort or… even a cat.  Rather, to allow it to exist in that moment with you.

Today’s card is the Two of Cups combined with the affirmation “You could fail a million times over and you’d still be worth knowing and loving. You’d still belong here.”

These cards are a reminder that those who love you are going to love you no matter what. It’s not about what you can do for them or how good you are at something. It’s not about your successes or failures, or any of those things. They love you.  They want to be around you regardless of your struggles and moments of strife.

Today’s meditation was ten minutes long, and was one of the #DailyTrip sessions from the Calm app. Today’s session was about how meditation is not always about finding time to make your environment and situation perfectly conducive to a meditation session, but rather about taking those times you’ve found that “sweet spot” with you into the times when there isn’t one.  It’s about taking a pause during a stressful situation and just… relaxing your shoulders while focusing on a slow inhale.  It’s about using the skills learned in the day to day, even when things are at their most stressful or inconvenient, but taking ten seconds.  One breath.  Finding center in that moment, then continuing on.

Today’s card is the Seven of Pentacles combined with the affirmation “Hey, you are enough as you are today.  You don’t need to prove anything.”

Slow growth is still growth.  Today’s card is a reminder that even on our slowest days, we’re still “enough” and don’t need to prove anything. There’s no need to rush or to push.  Just do what you do and you’ll get there when you get there.

This can be an especially hard lesson for those that are used to picking up new skills easily or learning new things quickly. You get used to that fast pace as you pick up one skill after another, try one new thing after another, and gather more and more experience under your belt.  When you then run across something that doesn’t come so easily, it feels like failure.  It’s not, though. It’s just a different kind of growth. These cards are a reminder to not try to push it, instead just let it come at its own pace.

Queen of Swords – The Anthony de Mello quote in today’s meditation app and the Queen of Swords always remind me of the story of the two wolves that live within us all. How one is vicious and evil, the other courageous and good… and it’s the one that we feed that survives. The Queen of Swords can be strong and supportive… or cold and self-centered.

Today’s “higher self” affirmation combined with the Queen of Swords reminds us that who we are is a choice. How we behave is a choice. That it’s important to foster in yourself the good within you so that it can grow and strengthen, rather than feeding the bad wolf and allowing it to grow strong instead.
