That nasty inner narrative inside your head is not real. It is not speaking the truth.  It can be extremely hard to tell it to fuck off, but at the same time? We need to remember to acknowledge the reality that it tries to build in your mind is, in fact, fictional.

Over the past couple years, I’ve poured a lot of effort and energy into this process, and today’s cards are a reminder that there’s still a long way to go. Don’t give up. Stay passionate about improving our own self treatment.  It’s important.

Daily Self Kindness

I spoke up for myself today when I was feeling hurt by something someone said.  I took some time first to make sure that emotions had calmed, then pulled them aside and told them how I felt about their words and treatment.

My wish is that I could and would and will treat myself with the same patience and kindness that I give to others. It’s a good wish, and one that I’m working on, although with only minor incremental success thus far.

Still, I’ll keep trying.  I’ll keep trying and at some point? I’ll find that balance between giving myself kindness and patience… and staying motivated toward my goals as I do so.  I won’t give up on this. It’s important.

The Lovers and Ace of Cups – There is still a lot of uncertainty when it comes to healthy expression of your emotions. The emotional intelligence that you normally would’ve learned in your adolescent years, you didn’t get the chance to learn. You’re trying to learn it now and there’s a good deal of struggle involved, which causes your inner adolescent a great deal of angst.

How can I help my inner adolescent to let go of their unresolved angst?

King of Pentacles and The Moon – Reinforce feelings of stability in other parts of your life to help you deal with your feelings of uncertainty where your emotions are concerned. That’s stability can help alleviate some of that unresolved angst that you’re inner adolescent feels. It’s easier to feel vulnerable when you can acknowledge that you are in a safe place.

How can I embrace my inner rebel during this Full Moon?

The High Priestess and Toad – Don’t allow irritation pull you off your intuition’s voice.  You need to listen to that inner knowing and do what -you- know is right rather than allowing others to badger, bug, or otherwise harass you into taking a path you know in your gut is not right for you.

What steps can I take to break free from restrictive patterns?

Eight of Cups and Snake – When something doesn’t feel right, don’t stick around just because others expect you to or you expect yourself to bear it out. Instead, look for those toxic things in your life, and as they come to your attention get rid of them… even when those might actually be people.

What change is necessary to pave a new path that aligns with me?

Eight of Swords and Salmon – You need to open your eyes and start working on seeing your environment with more clarity, rather than hiding from the harmful things that are right in front of you that you are choosing to willfully ignore.

August 16 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s meditation was eight minutes long, and was a series of for three stress reduction exercises from the Calm app. Five Senses. Body Scan. Watching the breath.

Today’s card is the Five of Cups combined with the affirmation “It’s good you’re in the world today. Thanks for showing up.”

It can be really hard sometimes to see the good in one’s life. When things are down or not going your way, sometimes it gets nearly impossible to count your blessings and look on the bright side.  Instead, you get sucked into the disappointments or feeling sorry for yourself.

The message in today’s cards is to remember not to let those morose moments go too deep into the dark that they drag you right into the pit of depression. Remember that even when things aren’t going your way?  There are people out there that love and cherish you, and are glad you are a part of their lives.  There are strangers who, with just a smile from you or a small kindness, go on to spread goodness to others through the lift you gave them to their day.

These cards are a reminder that you matter… even when you’re at your worst.

August 17 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s meditation was skipped.

Today’s card is the Ascension card combined with the affirmation “You are not lost, afloat. People care about you, and you have a lot of cool stuff left to do.”

Remember that there is light in the darkness, even if sometimes it’s not necessarily easy to see. The message in today’s cards is a reminder to make sure that you are moving toward the light instead of wallowing in the dark and letting it drown you.

For me in particular, this means making sure I am consciously putting effort toward positivity and optimism, instead of indulging my natural inclination towards negative self-talk and pessimistic thinking.  In making that conscious effort, I give myself a better balance, which assists me in staying out of depression’s pit a bit longer, and not falling quite as deeply into that pit when I do end up slipping over the edge.

August 18 – Mental Health Card of the Day

Today’s meditation was skipped.

Today’s card is the Knight of Pentacles (Masks) combined with the affirmation “Words matter.”

A lot of the card-of-the-day cards this week or so have been about making sure that you are acting in line with the person you want to be and become.  They focus on behavior.  About what we do and what we say, and how these things affect other people.  Today’s cards are no different.

The road to the person we want to become is a long one that starts at birth and ends at death. It can be difficult, sometimes, not to give in to sniping and gossip, negativity and hurtful comments… especially at times when we ourselves are angry, afraid, or hurting in some way.

The message in today’s cards is that on this slow road, it’s important to keep in mind the kind of person you really want to be.  Do you want to be rejected, disliked, and feared because of your sharp tongue?  Or do you want to have friends and valuable relationships because you support others and allow others to support you in turn when you need it?

These Saturday readings are (not usually) bearing in on any one thing or event in my life, as the question used is asking for a more general outlook. This is a self care exercise, and is not meant as a predictive reading… although that, too, happens on occasion.

The question is… What do I need to focus for self-care through the week ahead?

EarthFive of Swords – Are you going to be a gracious winner? Or a gloating ass? The other guy is already bleeding and his day is fucked. Do you really need to go the extra step of grinding it in and making them feel worse? Remember the person that you want to be, and resist the impulse of the moment.

AirAce of Swords – Make sure that you aren’t ignoring or discounting new ideas this week, but instead are communicating them with others or writing them down for posterity. They’re good, and worth entertaining. Who knows, one of them might even ignite a wildfire of inspiration.

WaterEight of Swords – When it comes to your emotions, just because you ignore it doesn’t mean that it’ll go away. Make sure that you are communicating and sharing your emotions rather than trying to bury them or hide them away.

The message in today’s cards is a reminder not to let your misguided need to be on top of everything and in control prevent you from giving yourself the kindnesses you need.

It isn’t any better of a job if there’s suffering involved than if there isn’t.  You don’t have to bleed for a project to finish well, and you don’t have to suffer for your responsibilities to be cared for.  That mentality might be what you were raised with, but neglecting yourself doesn’t pay off in the end… it just makes everything that much harder.

What can I do to help my inner adolescent feel less neglected?

The Discipulus Oracle by Dominic MurphyJustice and Sensitivity – Remember that there’s a difference between justice and fairness. Be sensitive to what you are feeling instead of shoving it aside when faced with moments where fairness needs to take the fore.  Consciously making the choice to prioritize that need for fairness can help your inner adolescent feel less neglected.

What can I do to help my inner adolescent feel more heard and understood?

Wisdom and Giving Up – Sometimes you just have to let go of logic and go with your gut instead. Like your intuition and your spirit guides, your inner adolescent tries to communicate to you through the same methods of physical sensation.  You haven’t sussed out the nuances of how to tell the difference yet, but you will if you give yourself the time to listen and freedom to hear those inner tugs instead of leaning into logic at every turn.
